What’s Up With PARC By John Brodman The Pine Knoll Shores Parks and Recreation Committee (PARC) recently completed four very successful events, an Easter Egg Hunt on April 24 in Garner Park, the second annual Tree City Fair on April 30, Carteret County Senior Olympic Games on May 6, and Hope For The Warriors Bicycle Race on May 21. Pictures and a report on the Easter Egg Hunt and Senior Games are included separately in this edition. The Second Annual Tree City Fair took place on a beautiful day, and we had a great turnout. The food sellers (Womens Club, Fire and EMS and the Country Club) did a brisk business, as did the Garden Club and the arts and crafts vendors. TTie art exhibit was well attended, and the local artists who had set up their easels on the deck of Veter ans Park were pleasantly surprised by the number of people that came by to talk and take an interest in their work. Next year, we plan to have music right from the start and to shut down a little bit earlier. We are putting the final touches on the elaborate planning that goes into the Annual Pirie Knoll Shores Kayak For The Warriors (K4W) events planned for June 10 and 11. As of the middle of May, when we went to press, more than $20,000 for the Wounded Warriors had already been raised. The kayak race will take place this year on Saturday, June 11 at 10 a.m. in Garner Park on Oakleaf Drive. The K4W event is a fundraiser for the Hope For The Warriors Foundation. Last year the events raised $30,000, which is a great testimony to the magnanimous spirit of our small town. Remember, all registration fees and sponsor contribu tions are tax-deductible, and this year you can register for any of the events or contribute on-line by visiting our web site at www.kayakforthewarriors.org. If you prefer, you can also download the registration and sponsor forms, fill them out and bring or mail them to town hall. Onsite registration for all events will also be available on Saturday morning June 11 at McNeil and Garner Parks. The weekend of events begins on Friday evening with a reception at town hall from 5 to 6:30 p.m. to honor Wounded Warriors. Like last year, we expect to have several wounded warriors present at our event. The reception is free for sponsors and participants, but is open to everyone else with a suggested donation of $5. Your contribution will help us provide wine, light food, music and friendship. A silent auction featuring the works of several well-known local artists will also be held during the reception, so bring your checkbooks. This year’s auction features some great pieces of sculpture, paintings, and the works of master carvers and quilters. You can also go to our website to see photos and more information on the auction items. This year will also feature family fun bike rides of 5 or 10 kilometers through the back streets of Pine Knoll Shores. The bike ride begins at 8:30 a.m. from McNeil Park. A $10 donation includes the registration fee and lunch. The kay ak race itself, which features both single and double kayaks and paddle boards, will begin at 10 a.m. from Garner Park and follow a 3.2 mile course through the canal. A $40 donation includes the registration fee, race, t-shirt and lunch. A “Family Fun Funny Boat Race” featuring funny boats, homemade boats and any paddle-worthy vessel will be held in the shallow waters of Bogue Sound in the immediate vicin ity of Garner Park (for easy viewing) at 10:30 a.m. The $20 donation covers registration and lunch. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. This year we are offering a $50 prize for the most creative or decorative boat entered into the Funny Boat category. There are only a few rules. The vessel must be “paddle-worthy”, but it doesn’t have to paddle well, and the boat must float, but not for long. We want to en courage more people to participate this year with funny homemade flotation devices. In the last few years we have only had one entry, the USS Miss- Take (on the lake), which was an old windsurfer platform outfitted with “sea snake” Hawaiian-style outriggers, with an umbrella and lawn chair bohed to the deck. Get creative, build your own Kon Tiki, cardboard boat, Merrimac or Monitor replica, Huck Finn river rafl;, or yellow submarine. If you build it, we will allow it. After the race there will be a picnic lunch, a raffle that will include many items donated by local merchants and What’s New By Tom Powers On the island, the Dairy Queen across from the Sheraton has reopened for the season and the Resort Grill has opened up in the Sands Villa condos where Sirens use to be. The Grill offers breakfast and lunch with a unique decor - it’s part gift shop. The Atlantic Beach Post Office has been a source of rumors lately. There was a reorganization which caused pur letter carriers to be reassigned to Morehead City and there has been talk circling that maybe it will be closing but so far that seems to be just rumor. Depending on who you talk to the story changes so I guess we will just have to wait and see. Emerald Isle has opened their new boat ramp facility and it’s said to be the largest on the North Carolina coast. Located on Route 58 just east of town, it’s big, wide open and very nice. The Cinema in Morehead City has closed, been torn down and another Dollar Store is going up in its place. Hooters has closed as has A Taste of Italy. A new eatery, Pete’s Pour House, is scheduled to open soon in the former Hooters building. Morehead City Cigars has opened in the old gas station building across from K-Mart. Jing Giannas, a new Italian restaurant that will be open for lunch and dinner should be opening around June 1 in the old Bountiful Bagel location. I-Hop is opening next to the new Verizon building on Route 70 so it won’t be long and you will be able to have that 2,000- calorie breakfast. Five Guys hamburger franchise will be opening soon just behind the new iHop a few doors down from Buffalo Wild Wings. restaurants, a special ”50/50” all-cash raffle and an awards ceremony. As usual, the mayor and most PKS com missioners will be there, participating and helping out. PKS Kayak For The Warriors t-shirts will be for sale. Please register and come out and join the fun. If you aren’t interested in any of the sports events, please make a contribution and come out for the pic nic lunch and festivities. The proceeds from all Hope For The Warriors events will go to the Hope For The Warriors Foundation, a civiUan organization with 501(c)(3) status. Registration/ sponsorship forms are available at the town hall- Online registration is also available this year. For more informa tion on any of these events go to: www. kayakforthewarriors.com. Looking beyond K4W, there will be the annual July 4 parade for the little ones beginning at Garner Park, and a “clean beaches sweep” starting from the Iron Steamer at 9 a.m. on July 5. Please come out, join your neighbors, pick your favorite stretch of beach and help us clean up after the big weekend. Bring gloves; you will be surprised by what people leave behind.
