Martha's Mission ' (continued from 3) 1990, Robert Herbst became director and Ann Coleman assumed the role of manager. On April 22, 2005, Jan Maxwell, who had been treasurer since 1993, became manager/treasurer, a position she, with tireless dedication, still holds. Currently, Martha Bell is executive director; Bob Montgomery, president; Ethel Van Horn, vice president; and Daisy Casey, sec retary. In addition, Marthas Mission Cupboard has a 15-member board of directors and approximately 55 working volunteers, who assist in all the tasks associated with day-to-day operations. Forming the base of those operations are Jan Maxwell, Ethel Van Horn, Mary Allen Hinton and Lil Zaminer, who keep records on families coming to the Cupboard, account for donations and help manage the overall volunteer effort. Other volunteers order items to be distributed; make deliveries of donated items to the Cupboard; package frozen chicken; and stock shelves, freezers and refrigerators. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., volunteers fill grocery bags for those referred by the Department of Social Services, distributing such items as canned fruits and vegeta bles, soups, cereal, sugar, flour, rice, beans, grits, peanut butter, jelly, crackers, bread, frozen chicken, hot dogs, rolls, eggs, juice, marga rine, desserts, laundry detergent, hand soap, dishwashing detergent and toilet paper. Last year, 7,845 individuals received approximately $ 100,000 worth of groceries. Martha’s Mission Cupboard operates completely on donations and with volunteers. It has no paid staff. Thanks to the generosity and continued commitment of First Baptist Church and so many other churches, civic organizations, businesses and individuals, it has no significant overhead obligations. Marthas Mission Cupboard has won the Governor’s Award for Volunteer Services four times, most recently in March of this year. It is truly a model non-profit charity. By Tom Powers Another month and another great monthly meeting. The Cruisers have grown from a flyer to a group of people who are getting to know each other pretty well. We’re even starting to remember each other’s names. And I guess we plan on being together for awhile because this month we began designing our own custom T-shirt. You might think that the high price of gas has slowed us down but that’s not the case. We’re certainly a little more conservative with our planning but we are all still going. We have a family out west right now, one planning a trip New York, another to Maine and as a group we are planning a trip to Virginia Beach next month. It may cost us a little more to get there right now but when you are there your cost are a lot less and, what most of us like, is that you feel like you are in your own home, sleeping in your own bed and not worrying about wrinkled clothes due to packing and unpack ing. The trip there is a lot more pleasant also. There’s no security check when you climb aboard and if you tire along the way you can just pull over, stretch out on the sofa, crank up the satellite TV and take a catnap. And best of all, you don’t need to make unplanned stops for drinks, snacks and bathrooms. When you reach your destination it only takes a few minutes to setup-unhook the car or truck, roll down the awning, take out the lawn chairs and set out the welcome mat. It’s so much nicer than a hotel room. It’s home. If you have an RV or are considering one we welcome you to our dinner meet ings which are held the first Monday of every month at 6 p.m. at Raps in Morehead City.
