The towns mayor and several of the commissioners and staff attended the reception and the event. Again this year, all of the winning entries will be on display until the end of the month at the Bogue Banks Public Library. Our sponsors were very generous with their donations for the People’s Choice Awards and recognitions for the judges: Kites Unlimited and Bird Stuff provided the prize for the Decorative People’s Choice Award; Beach Book Mart, Atlantic Beach and the Pine Knoll Shores Garden Club sponsored the Functional People’s Choice Award. J&S Landscape & Design provided beautiful plants for the judges. Support from our local media helped spread the word. How fortunate we are to have the support of local television and news outlets who pubhcized the com petition—The Shoreline, Island Review, The Carteret News-Times and Time Warner Cable Channel 10. Thanks go to all the volunteers who made this year’s birdhouse competition a success, including JoAnn Shallcross, event co-chair; Jan Corsello, who was in charge of publicity; Birdhouse Committee members; and the Garden Club. If you missed this year’s competition, be sure to visit the Bogue Banks Public Library for an up-close examination. You will be impressed! Hopefully, you will be inspired to begin working on your entry for next year’s competition. It’s not too early to begin planning for the 2012 Birdhouse Show and Competition. On June 8, Pine Knoll Shores’ Garden Club held its annual luncheon at the Coral Bay Club in Atlantic Beach, and installed ofUcers for 2011-2012. Outgoing President Martha Edwards welcomed members and reviewed the year’s activities. She also thanked her Board. Among the year’s highlights she mentioned the club yearbook’s getting fourth place in the District competition; the club’s participation in the town’s Christmas parade; the birdhouse competition and a Tweet Shop for children to decorate their own birdhouses; participation in the Tree City Fair by having a successful plant sale, all plants being donated by Garden Club members. But the year’s biggest highlight was a bus trip to Wilmington with Womens Club members to visit the Arboretum and the Farmers’ Market and to shop at Pender Pines Garden Center in Hampstead. Former Garden Club President Carol McVitty gave the invocation. Membership Chair Linda Langheld gave gifts to the three new members who joined the Garden Club during the year, Lana Hathaway, Jean McDanal and Joy Wray. Following the luncheon, former Garden Club President Kay Howe installed the new officers, presenting them with flowering plants in various colors symbolizing their office. Karen Zaenker was sworn in as the new president; Sheryl Woodbury and Jan Corsello will share duties of the first vice-president; Linda Langheld will be second vice-president and will be in charge of projects; Barbara WilUams will be the recording secretary; Helvi Larson will be the treasurer and Donna Belanger has agreed to be corresponding secretary again. Even though the Garden Club does not meet during July and August, members will still be busy picking up trash in designated areas, weeding and tending to the areas that the Garden Club maintains and watering newly planted trees.
