What’s New By Tom Powers What’s Happening in Beacon’s Reach Although the economy may be bad it’s not showing up in the restaurant business around here. A new restaurant “Old Siam” is opening in the building that formerly housed A Taste of Italy and is advertising a Thai Cuisine. loanni s Grill (pronounced Yannis) is relocating from its location in the back row of the Peletier shopping center to the original El Zarapes building on Arendell. This is the light green wooden building that’s on the right just past Friendly Rd. If you’re not familiar with loanni’s, it has a sports bar theme and they are known for their wings, pizza’s and burgers. And it’s rumored that a high end steak house will be going into Ioanna’s old location. Another tobacco shop has opened. Appropriately named Tobacco, it is located in the Market Place shopping center adjacent to Blockbuster movie rentals and right next door to it the Core Sound Corner Store has opened offering restored, renewed and recycled goods. It’s only open on Friday & Saturday and I didn’t get to go in but it looked like a well organized, high-end consignment shop. And-finally, if you see all the construction equipment on the shopping center parking lot across from Sears don’t get too excited. They are simply “squaring up” the parking lot by adding additional parking spaces. When done it will allow you to drive straight through the lot without making all the turns that you have to make now. Although there is a bit more traffic traversing Salter Path Road and on a few hot summer days, sea breezes are uncharacteristically absent, it is an enjoyable time of the year. Strategic planning and errand consolidation can relieve those bothersome traffic issues while the diminished wind rate on a simmering summer day is a good pretext to enjoy a tall cool one, or two. . Summer is the time when 12 of the 13 home owner associations of Beacon’s . Reach convene their annual meetings. . The three associations that convened these meetings in May were Westport II, Westport IV and Maritime Place. . The July meetings were Fiddlers Walk and Maritime West on July 2, Coral . Shores on July 16 and Ocean Grove #1 on July 23. . The Breakers annual meeting will be held at a date to be determined in August, . and on Saturday August 27 the Single Family Association will hold its annual a gathering in town hall beginning at 10 a.m. . On September 3 at 9 a.m., Westport I will hold its annual gathering at the ad ministrative office conference room, and with any luck, they will be end before 11 a.m., when the annual meeting of Westport III is scheduled. . The big daddy of the Beacon’s Reach homeowners associations, the Beacon’s . Reach Master Association, will hold its annual meeting at town hall on Sunday September 4, beginning at 3 p.m. . Ocean Grove West holds its meeting in the fall. The long-established Beacon’s Reach practice of gathering at the marina to cele brate the three major summer holidays with “Pig Pickin’s” continues. The Memorial Day get-together was attended by a large number of owners and their guests—353 people, marking one of the largest celebrations in recent memory. Whether it was the food, weather, camaraderie or music that drew the crowd, all enjoyed the event. The Fourth of July shindig was held on the third and attracted 292. Labor Day festivities will be held on Sunday September 4, beginning at 3 p.m., and Main Event will be the featured band. Other news from the Reach includes the decision made by Atlantic Beach, Em erald Isle and Pine Knoll Shores to impose a fee for parking at some of the public accesses. Concern was expressed by some residents, who speculated that many visitors wishing to enjoy the beach would certainly avoid paid lots and overwhelm the four public access sites located within Beacon’s Reach. Measures including addi tional patrol of these parking lots on Saturdays and Sundays were taken to address this possibility. According to Mary Hawn, the person responsible for security, these lots experienced little to no change in usage during the busy Memorial and Fourth of July weekends, and in fact, one of the parking lots has remained unused except for one vehicle on the July Fourth weekend. Parking is not anticipated to be a prob lem at the upcoming Labor Day weekend. It appears that encroachment concerns can be shelved, for now at least. There have been complaints about litter. Finally, an update on the status of the former Sunny Shores building located on Sunny Shores Drive across the parking lot from the administrative offices of Beacon’s Reach. The external and internal refurbishing of the facility has been completed. The building is now attractively landscaped, and the interior space has been improved, repainted and upgraded. Manager Grady Fulcher reports interest has been expressed in renting some of the room, but additional space is currently available. Anyone interested in renting office space is urged to contact Grady at 247-4017. Until next time, enjoy the remaining summer months. 14 The Shoreline I August 2011
