Town Manager Kramer gave his report on a number of subjects including an up date on the Mimosa Bridge and yet another setback that required approval from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to remedy. The reason able completion date for the bridge is nov/ July 1. The pedestrian bridge has been heavily used, and no complaints have been registered regarding the detour. Some unexpected costs associated with the project had to be absorbed by the town. Bad news was reported regarding the Hurricane Irene beach renourishment project. The North Carolina Senate did not allocate any beach nourishment money in its budget. In other state news, the town is still awaiting word on its application to the Clean Water Trust Fund for the East End Stormwater Project. The controversy with Waste Industries regarding the number of trashcans has been identified as “summer people generating more trash.” However, it was pointed out that in the off-season, those summer” houses do not have any trash. Relative to the subject of loose dogs on the beach, an appeal was made to have certain leash-free hours for responsible people who have control over their dogs. No decision was made at this time. It is expected that the new town Web site will go into operation on July 17. The grand opening of the Bark Park was announced for June 30. Commissioners finally approved the town fleet management policy that has been the subject of many previous discussions. The Town’s financial policy, cash man agement plan and designated reserves were also discussed at length, and they were approved as amended. The proliferation of No parking signs on Route 58 was discussed. It was noted that the ordinance prohibiting parking is posted at either end of town, so perhaps 50% of the signs can be removed. The County transportation plan was approved. Maps and recommendations can be viewed at www.eccog.org/document.asp?document_id=180. The towns pedes trian plan was incorporated into the document, making Pine Knoll Shores eligible for NCDOT funding. Each municipality needs to endorse the plan before NCDOT can adopt it. Commissioners also approved a road maintenance plan. After personnel checked all the roads in town, it was established that Knollwood, Pinewood and Bay Drives were most in need of repaving. To save mobilization costs, the plan is to do this work while the asphalt paver is in town doing the Mimosa Bridge area. The road repair will be paid by NCDOT from Powell Bill funds. Your refurbished parks were the outstanding staging areas for the well-attended 2012 Hope for the Warriors events on June 9. Thanks to the tireless efforts of PIKSCO Directors Ric Cox, Allen Smith and Bruce Flynt and Ches Garner, incoming director, as well as other caring homeowners, McNeill and Garner Parks were trimmed up and war rior-ready. McNeill Park provided a convenient rallying point for cyclists—young, old and older who participated in the Family Fun Bike Ride on Saturday morning. At the entrance, a newly planted bed of palms and lantanas welcomed the enthusiastic crowd of riders. Several participants remarked that the removal of several unsighdy tree stumps was a huge improvement, and others commented on the new PIKSCO information box at the pavUion. Garner Park also offered a spacious and gracious venue for the more than 125 kayakers who battled in the Kayak for the Warriors event later that morning. Participants spread out over the neatly mulched bulkhead areas for a last minute equipment check while well- vdshers vied for a spot on the pier to watch the much-anticipated launch. After the race, lunch was served at the pavilion, and kayakers, warriors and supporters enjoyed a hot dog feast under colorful tents as they revisited highlights of Pine Knoll Shores’ most thrilling paddle event. Please join your PIKSCO friends and directors for an ice cream social at McNeill Park on Monday, July 16, at 6:00 p.m. We will hold our brief annual meeting, say good-bye to outgoing directors, JoAnn Shallcross and Allen Smith, and introduce our new directors, Sylvia Brodman and Ches Garner. See you there! The PIKSCO Board of Directors meets every third Monday of the month at 5:00 p.m. at Town Hall. All homeowners are welcome to attend.
