Aquarium Pays Tribute to Volunteers
The North Carohna Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores recently saluted its more than 200 volunteers and singled out several for
outstanding contributions to the Aquariums conservation mission.
Rita Ellington of Newport was chosen as Volunteer of the Year. Ellington spends most of her volunteer hours as an interpreter
at the River Otter exhibit. Debbie Dunham of Bridgeton won the Order of the Octopus award for her wilhngness and flexibility
in filling a variety of roles. Peg Karas of Chocowinity was cited for outstanding customer service with the Order of the Spadefish
award. Barbara Lemieux of Emerald Isle received the one-time Penguin Plunge award for her many hours interpreting at the
visiting penguin exhibit this past summer.
Above and Beyond recognition went to Kathy Eatmon of Newport, Barbara Odgers of New Bern and Lucas Gomez of
Morehead City for excellence in performance of their duties. Dedicated Volunteer Service recognition went to Nancy Aitken,
Barbara Neptune and Guy Rouse of Morehead City; Linda Allen, Jan Voelpel and Bob Wilson of Emerald Isle; Gloria Matthews
of Swansboro and Freda Pyron of New Bern.
Among volunteer divers, Cindy Garp of Jacksonville was chosen as Diver of the Year and Bubba McLean the Rookie Diver
of the Year. The Saturday “A” dive team led by John Fifer was chosen as Dive Team of the Year. Members include Brennan Fifer,
Isaac Hopkins, Lee Merrion and Jason Ellington.
The aquarium hosted a volunteer open house on February 2. Aquarium staff and current volunteers were on hand to discuss
the volunteer experience with potential hew volunteers and describe current openings.

Members of the Beaufort Historical
Association (BHA) and guests were
treated to a delicious potluck dinner
and the presentation of the Volunteer
Awards at BHAs semi-annual member
ship meeting, Tuesday, January 22, at
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Beaufort.
Tlie BHA presented five awards during
the evenings event, recognizing indi
viduals for their exceptional volunteer
efforts during 2012.
