How many of us have been touched by or have friends or family members who have been touched by cancer? Certainly all, or most, of us. How many in Carteret County, in addition to the challenges and exhaustion that come with battling this disease, have had the added burden of three, four or more hours spent in the car on a regular basis over a prolonged period of time to get the necessary treatments? I think we would all agree: too many. According to Carteret General Hospital (CGH), “our community’s growing and aging population is creating an unrelenting demand for cancer services—patient volumes have doubled over the last three years.” CGH’s proposed new Cancer Center will accommodate more patients and improve coordination of care by combining radiation oncology, medical oncology and supportive therapy services all under one roof for the most convenient, comforting and clinically effective cancer care for us and our loved ones. As medical science expands our understanding of cancer and its causes and cures, the new Cancer Center, scheduled to open in spring 2015, will also position CGH to take advantage of next- generation treatments and therapies. CGH is a not-for-profit hospital which does not receive county or city tax dollars. Philanthropy is essential to raising the $12 million to complete the project. When CGH President Dick Brvenik and members of the Foundation Board invited the Country Club of the Crystal Coast (CCCC) to host a Charity Pro-Am Tennis Tournament to benefit the CGH Cancer Center, General Manager Chip Chamberlain and members of the CCCC Board said, “Yes.” (Continued on page 4) m 0 The Pine Knoll Shores Radio Station broadcasts 24 hours a day -" with weather and emergency info. History of Local Lobster Fest By Phyllis Makuck The St. Francis by the Sea Lobster Fest, which on October 19 celebrates its ninth year, is many years in the making. Pine Knoll Shores resident Jesse Randall is its prime mover. As a pilot stationed at Cherry Point from 1963 to 1976, Jesse was making scheduled flights up to Maine. He and some buddies had the brainstorm that they could buy lobsters while they were there and have lobster parties when they returned. The lobsters were so good Jesse wanted to continue getting them after he retired. He and his wife, Trish, were attending St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Swansboro. Other Episcopal churches, in North Carolina and elsewhere in the country, had a tradition of (Continued on page 3) Peter and Phyllis Makuck 549 Coral Ridge Rd Pine Knoll Shores, NC 28512-6901 Standard Pre-Sort Permit #35 1, NC 28512
