C « shoreline Vol. 10, No. 11 Seventh Annual Kayak for the Warriors By Jean McDanal Are your kayaks and paddleboards ready for the seventh annual Kayak for the Warriors event? On Thursday, June 5, there is a homes tour of 12 unique houses on the beach, canals and sound. The tour begins at 3 p.m. and will end in time for everyone to get to the site of the warriors’ reception and auction. Tickets are $30, adults only, and include admis sion to the reception and auction at the North Carolina Aquarium, beginning at 7 p.m. and ending promptly at 9 p.m. 'Light food and wine will be available, and you will have an opportunity to bid on some great items. Check out items that have been donated on our Face- book page. Tickets for the reception and auction only are $5 at the door. On Saturday, June 7, the kayak and paddleboard race will begin at 10 a.m. at Garner Park on Oakleaf Drive and complete a 3.2-mile course around the canals. Paddleboarders will start five minutes before kayakers. The $45 regis tration fee includes a t-shirt and lunch. We will once again feature the warrior race in which a participant could win the coveted prize by raising the most money for Hope for the Warriors®. For every dollar raised by each racer, one second will be deducted from his/ her actual race time. The racer with the shortest calculated time is the winner. The rangers attended the Arbor Day ceremony to present a Tree City USA flag to the town, and the Garden Club dedi cated the Okame cherry tree in the background in memory of former members Nellie Seale and Julia Wollard. Arbor Day Celebration By Yvette Bannen On March 21, the Community Appearance Commission (CAC) and the Garden Club held an Arbor Day celebration at town hall. Mayor Ken Jones welcomed everyone present, noted the perfect spring day and read the Arbor Day proclamation. In North Carolina, Arbor Day is celebrated on the first Friday following March 15. . Two rangers from the North Carolina Forest Service presented the town with a Tree City U.S.A. flag, marking the 14th year in a row that the town has received this designation.
