What’s Up With PARC? Jean McDanal Lace up those hiking shoes; Pine Knoll Shores has a new hiking trail. With the help of Cape Carteret Boy Scout Troop 446, Scout Master John Weidler and Eagle Scout candidate Jackson Blivins, a section of land was cleared on April 5 that extends from Municipal Court to Roosevelt Boulevard (the access road for the aquarium). The deeded tract of land, given to the town, stipulated that this land could be used only for recreation. Subsequently, a citizens’ committee appointed by the Board of Commissioners decided that the best use was a nature trail. The Boy Scouts, armed with eye protection, pruners, rakes, energy and biceps, worked on this tract for a day to clear a trail. PARC volunteers Dan Law, Teresa Stanton-Law and BJ Peter fed them lunch, and two town employees, Ernie Rudolph and Michael Maligisi, volunteered some time on their weekend to help out. As a result of this group eifort, we ijow have an extension of the Veterans Park trail. The trail is rustic (not a flat running path), which is exactly what we envisioned. It provides a nice walk through the maritime forest, complete with movement over thousand-year-old dunes that are now covered in vegetation. The trail does not yet run all the way to Rooseyelt Boulevard because work is still needed on a swampy area that requires a bridge. The goal is to one day enable a hiker to walk from the sound across this trail, move along Roosevelt Boulevard to the aquarium and then take the aquarium’s spectacular path through the Roosevelt Natural Area. That will be a very cool walk through the woods. We are receiving lots of questions regarding volunteering for the Kayak for the Warriors event. Here is a list of the team captains who are helping to coordinate various aspects of the auction and race. This community has been absolutely incredible in the past, so don’t be shy. If you have volunteered in the past and want to help again, please email these folks. From left (first row): Gatlin Weidler, Josh Wagner.
