Featured Artwork. In May, the art gallery will feature selected photography of photographer and poet Shirley Noonan. Her poetry and imagery are a result of 50 years of experiences living and traveling at PKA NEWS One of two new benches at Hall Haven—Photo by AmryCox By Am ry Cox May is preparation time in Pine Knoll Shores as the warm weather brings out friends and family. The month is filled with Cinco de Mayo, CERT training, PKA volunteer park work days, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day. Speaking of preparing, here’s a re minder about the two volunteer work days this month. Join neighbors on Thursday, May 8, at 9 a.m. at Brock Basin. The rain date is Satur day, May 10, at 9 a.m. Bring gloves and wear long pants to protect against the vines and home and abroad. Her work is both whimsical and serious, a reflection of her personality. Ms. Noonans work has been shown locally at Artists on Arendell, Blu Sail Gallery, the History Place and the Webb Library; in Onslow County; and at Penn Alps Gallery and the Culinaire Cafe in western Maryland. Examples of her awards include Excellence in Photography at the Art from the Heart show and Excellence in Photography at the Onslow Art Society show. Some of her work has also been published in Potomac Review, a Washington, D.C., literary publication, and in Country Living magazine. By sometimes combining poetry and photography, Ms. Noonan is able to present a visual and poetic interpretation of her musings. On display in the showcases are the colorful creations of award-winning potter Pam Holliday. A retired educator, Ms. Holliday progressed from studying pottery at the community college, to throwing pots at Bridges Street Pottery in Morehead City, to her first show in Beaufort in 2005. She is a member of the Carteret County Arts Council. Her pottery is always a popular exhibit at our library. The opening reception will be Friday, May 9, from 3-4 p.m. briars. Plan on a general cleanup: trimming, pulling vines, piling up dead wood, and sprucing up the playground, horse shoe pits and bocce court. We will declare victory at noon and have some iced tea. Tlie following week, we will do similar spring cleanup at Ocean Park on Thursday, May 15, at 9 a.m. The rain date for Ocean Park efforts is Saturday, May 17, at 9 a.m. Again bring gloves, rakes and trimmers, and wear long sleeves and long pants for personal protection. Plan on sweeping, trimming, piling up dead wood and general sprucing up activities. We will declare another victory at noon and enjoy the view from the sittum along with our lemonade. Come out and donate a few hours of your time and energy or come out and cheer us on. A little encouragement goes a long way. We are in the process of painting and refreshing the striping on the parking lot at Ocean Park. A new plan is for overflow parking at Hall Haven for the three long holiday weekends: Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day. Watch for posted signs on those high-usage weekends. Enjoy the weather and take a walk around the neighborhood this month. Stop by Hall Haven and test the new benches, wave and say hello. May 2014 I The Shoreline 15
