CGH Expansion Update

If you’ve driven west on Arendell Street after crossing the bridge, you couldn’t
have helped noticing the major construction going on at Carteret General Hospital.
Its been in the news for some time now and the groundbreaking ceremony was
held on March 21. You can see by the amount of ground fenced off that this is a big
project, probably the largest economic development project Carteret County has
ever seen.
According to Dick Brvenik, CEO, this “new Specialty Pavilion... will address
regulatory requirements, the shift from inpatient to outpatient services, increasing
outpatient volumes and the demand for private rooms.” This project brings togeth
er several facility needs that have been discussed independently over several years.
A Master Facilities Plan was developed merging several improvements that will
enhance patient care and accessibility for persons seeking healthcare in the region.
The expansion will add about 112,000 square feet at an estimated project cost of
$53 million.
Cancer is a leading cause of death in Carteret County Treatment and services
have been available here for some time, but in scattered sites. Because cancer is
such a prevalent disease, it has touched—or will touch—almost all of us through
our immediate families, other relatives, friends or our own persons, as well. If the
choice was to have treatment locally, it often meant moving from one facility to
another and then, perhaps, to another.
The new multidisciplinary cancer center will be located on the main floor of
the new pavilion. If you’ve had any reason to visit the Raab Clinic where some
treatments are now offered, you are familiar with the very crowded conditions

Local Realtor Featured on HGTV

Home and Garden Television (HGTV) allows us to follow REALTORS® as they
show homes to potential buyers and, then, to watch serious remodeling projects.
Walls are torn down and rebuilt; rooms are enlarged and added on; flooring is '
pulled out and put in; kitchen and bathrooms are refashioned; old landscaping is
torn up and new landscaping with walkways
and decks appears; walls are repainted; and neW
furnishings are supplied. The house transforms '
into a dream home.
HGTV has recently done a segment in Pine
Knoll Shores. Cameras followed local realtor

around for four 12-hour days in May as part of
a feature called “Beachfront Bargain Hunters.”
HGTV has filmed in this area before, but
never in Pine Knoll Shores. Marian says: “The
first time they called I thought it was a scam
or at least a joke. But, no. Beachfront Bargain
Hunters had discovered the Crystal Coast, and
they wanted me to be the real estate agent for a segment. I decided to step outside
my comfort zone and give it a go.”
The program the network is planning will have several segments, each featuring
a different agent. Marian describes her experience. First, based on specific criteria,
she had to identify a couple who had recently bought a house. For example, the
house had to have sold for less than $375,000; the couple had to be young and,
preferably, have children and pets—“the American dream family.” Marian knew
immediately JefF and Julie would be the couple she would choose.
After details were taken care of, she, Jeff and Julie were interviewed via Skype.
Agreeing to be available for four consecutive days of filming, they signed contracts
with the network.
“A lot of work went into the days and weeks before filming began,” Marian says.
“I had the opportunity to select three comparable homes to be used on the show. I
helped identify areas of interest and served as the contact person for some.”
Of course, her real life as a REALTOR® did not go away. She says, “I tried hard,
but sometimes fell short, to stay on top of my real job. My clients were supportive
and patient, and my family was excited. It was hard work, a grueling schedule, but
loads of fun. I am confident that the exposure will be good for our area.” And, for
Marian, “It was a fabulous experience,” she says.
The program featuring Pine Knoll Shores is due to air some time in July.
Watch for it.
