The rising high school freshmen were swimming just beyond the breakers in front of the Clamdigger Inn in Pine Knoll Shores in beginning to show signs of distress and drifted out over their heads. The beach cleanup is sponsored each year by the Pine Knoll Shores Parks and Recre ation Committee (PARC) and the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. About 25 volunteers turned out this year, fewer than the 44 who showed up last year, but everyone was ready to grab a trash bag and comb their favorite section of the Pine Knoll Shores beach for trash left behind. We had an extraordinary group show up this year, consisting of eight special needs children from Carteret Coun ty’s Camp Sunshine, ready to hit the beach. These kids really loved the opportunity to visit the beach and pitch in, and they all returned with bags full of trash. While the hurricane may have distracted people from coming, it may also have washed away (or prevented) some of the trash we usually find after the Fourth of July, notably the paper residue left over from fireworks. Cigarette butts and food packaging were the bulk of our pickups this year. The beach was in pretty good shape—let’s hope it’s a sign that people are actually getting smarter about cleaning up after themselves. Special thanks to everyone who came out to help; Windy Arey Kent from the aquarium, John Brodman and Tom Kerwin from the Pine Knoll Shores Parks and Recreation Committee and Darlene Austin from Carteret County Parks and Recreation.
