Goes for a Hat Trick
By Mike and Buffa Hargett
A team of four Pine Knoll Shores residents, plus a guest rider, set their goal on
completing a "hat trick” by finishing the Cycle North Carolina Mountains to the
Coast bike ride for a third time. The annual event, now in its 16th year, is organized
and directed by the North Carolina Amateur Sports Association in Durham, and is
one of the most scenic and popular cross-state rides in the United States. The ride
is appropriately named, as it began in the Blue Ridge Mountains and ended on the
coast of the Outer Banks. The cities visited were Sparta, Mount Airy, Reidsville,
Oxford, Roanoke Rapids, Edenton, Manteo and Hatteras Village.
Approximately 1,200 riders, ages 7 to 85, from numerous states and several
countries, traversed the state on a variety of bicycles, including recumbent, tandem,
hybrids and road bikes. They traveled approximately 500 miles over seven days with
routes opening at 7:30 a.m. and closing at 5 p.m. Lodging choices included hotels
and B&Bs (our choice) and both indoor and outdoor camping (no way).
