With a passion for painting and drawing, she started out in decorative painting, teaching classes for almost 20 years., In 2000, she turned to fine art, working in acrylics on canvas. Much of her work has a coastal theme, but she also enjoys painting animals, flowers, birds and buildings. She recently completed a painting of the 2014 Kentucky Derby, commissioned for a couple in Louisville, Kentucky. Gwen is a member of the Carteret County Arts Council and the Art Coalition of Carteret County, which is a juried membership. She teaches at Wine and Design in Morehead City, has participated in many art shows over the years and has exhibited in the libraries and at the hospital. Her website is beachchickartist.com and she can be reached at beachchickartist@ aol.com or by calling 354-6716. The showcase will feature the work of Carol Roop. Carol started working with stained glass by taking a class back in 2006. After one class she was hooked, and immediately set up a studio in the laundry room in her Beaufort home. She outgrew the laundry room after a few years and moved her studio to a much larger space over the garage. The larger space allows her to build large panels as well as teach classes in stained glass. Carol’s artwork is available and on display at the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery in Beaufort, and in her studio by appointment. Visit her website (stainedglassnc.com) or Captain’s Quarters Stained Glass on Facebook for pictures of Carol’s art work. There is no reception scheduled this month. “Boatyard Duty” by Gwen Jordan and “Bottles and Jugs” by Carol Roop CAF presents Hank Fincken as Thomas Edison ^s;aiiunal lliCutiv:Coni{x-ny c>{ Onu Hank Fincken is a living history performer who is well known for his humorous and entertaining one-man plays. He incorporates the audience in every performance to create experiences that are insightful, provocative and relevant. As he puts it, “It’s art wearing a humanities tuxedo and a spinning bow tie.” The Carteret Arts Forum is proud to present Mr. Finken as he transports the audience to the days before the California Gold Rush, the turn of the century and the early years of the Great Depression by depicting the life of Thomas Alva Edison. Attendees will learn how Thomas Edison helped make America a world power with insights into how things work and how things could be made to work even better. Edison was a “poster child” for America, a land of infinite opportunity for dreamers who could mold possibilities into realities. He found success and improved the quality of our lives to this day as he made the connection between ideas and inventions that included the fluoroscope, the alkaline storage battery, the motion picture camera and more. Mr. Fincken has performed hiis one-man plays throughout the United States, Europe and South America in theaters, educational institutions and at conferences and cultural events. He has won recognition for his in-depth research, historical accuracy and skillful acting. In addition, he has published more than 30 short stories, poems and essays. Hank Fincken’s one-man play about the life of Thomas Edison is February 26 at 5 p.m. at the History Museum of Carteret County (formerly The History Place) in Morehead City.
