Pine Knoll Shores 8th Annual
Kayak for the Warriors Events
By Jean McDanal
Are your running shoes, kayaks and paddleboards ready for the 8th an
nual Kayak for the Warriors’’’'''' events? On Saturday, May 30, from 9-11 a.m.,
our newest event will be introduced. The 5K Military Challenge Run will
begin on the beach and meander through the knolls of Beacons Reach. Here
is where the challenge comes. To simulate the conditions our ground troops
work with every day while deployed, you’ll run the whole course carrying
an extra 20 pounds of sand in your backpack. As you raise funds, you get to
decrease the weight in your pack.
There will be two start times. At 9 a.m. the serious, competitive runners
will start, and at 9:10 other runners and walkers will start. Why this kind of
race? When our warriors go into combat, they carry packs that can vary from
25 to 90 pounds, depending on the situation they are facing. Add to that the
weight of their body armor, helmet, weapon and boots. Unless you have been
there and done that, it is difficult to fully appreciate the fortitude, stamina
and grit our armed services personnel display. The event fee of $25 includes a
t-shirt and water.
On Thursday, June 4, the Warrior reception and live auction will be held at
the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, beginning at 6:30 p.m. and ending
promptly at 9 p.m. Light food and wine will be available, and you will have an
opportunity to bid on some great items. Check out donations on our Face-
book page (and Like us while you’re there). Entrance to the auction is $5 per
person. We already have secured Panthers tickets to be auctioned off.
On Saturday, June 6, at 10 a.m. the 3.2-mile kayak and paddleboard race
around the canals will begin at Garner Park on Oakleaf Drive. Paddleboard-
ers will start five minutes before kayakers. A $45 registration fee includes a
t-shirt and lunch. We will once again feature the warrior race in which a par
ticipant could win the coveted prize by raising the most dollars for Hope For
The Warriors®. The warrior winner will be the racer with fastest warrior time
by calculating his or her event time based on raw time and dollars raised. For
every dollar raised by each racer, one second will be deducted from his or her
raw race time.
At 8:30 a.m., fun 5K and lOK bike rides will begin at McNeill Park. A $15
per person donation includes lunch. Family donations will be capped at $45.

Can You Help Fill the Bucket?
By Joan Lamson
It would be hard to miss the fast pace of the expansion construction at
Carteret General Hospital (CGH). It looks now as though we might have a
late summer ribbon cutting.
There will be many benefits to the community from this expansion, but the
CGH Foundation is especially interested in the new cancer center which will
be located on the main floor near the new welcoming lobby. The current Can
cer Program at CGH has received awards, accolades and accreditations, but
has been located in separate, off-site locations, which has been inconvenient
for those needing the services and for their caregivers.
The bricks and mortar construction has been totally funded through the
resources of the hospital, but the Hospital Foundation, which is a separate
corporation, plays a very important role in the real-life total care of the
patient and their caregivers. The fundraising campaign under way now will
add to the ability of the foundation to cover certain costs that could not be
paid by insurance, nor paid by the hospital. In the past, we have even paid gas
bills for persons who just didn’t have the resources. We’ve covered the cost of
gasoline for some needing a second opinion. Caregivers need a break from
time to time, and respite care can be an overwhelming need for some—and
the foundation can possibly cover the cost for that care. Hae foundation can
provide upgrades to technology that will help the hospital serve our commu
nity better. A good example of that is the recent purchase of the 3-D Tomog
raphy equipment that has already proved of benefit by the very early identity
of suspect cells (which were diagnosed as malignant) in two individuals.
This is the “bucket” we are hoping to-fill with philanthropic.gifts from
the community. We have reached nearly 75% of our goal of $6 million and
wonder if you can help fill the bucket. Gifts can be made over a pledge period
of five years, and donations of over $2,000 (which may also be paid over five
years) will be recognized on the Recognition Wall. Gifts under $2,000 will be
recognized in the honorarium book. By the way, the staff of the hospital, not
the administration and not the physicians, has given over $250,000. There are
still some naming opportunities available for those interested and able to con
sider a legacy gift to the foundation, but your gift at any level is important to
the accessibility of everyone to the services that can make such a difference.
If you have an interest in helping to fill the bucket at any level, let me know
and I will discuss the opportunities with you. Contact me by phone at 240-
3110 (home) or by email at joanlamson@embarqmail.com. ’
