Ga^en Club By Clare Winslow f Janie Price demonstrates how to make gardeners’ hand scrub at the September meeting of the Garden Club. —Photo by Clare Winslow “Welcome Back” was the prevailing theme of the first meeting of the season of the Pine Knoll Shores Garden Club on September 9. Camaraderie was much in evidence as members greeted each other after the long summer absence. Hostesses Jean McDanal, Helvi Larson, Karen Zaenker and Barbara Williams even geared the hospitality table theme to welcoming back students, with a fall chrysanthemum bouquet nestled in a vase made of a dozen No. 2 pencils, two apple figures sitting atop several school books with the old brown paper covering, a box of crayons, a hall pass, a composition book, cupcakes with a crayon in the middle instead of a candle and a copy of the ancient Dick and Jane reader. The program of the day was the creation of a very fragrant gardeners’ hand scrub by all the members of the club, instructed and aided by Janie Price of Pine Knoll Shores. Janie is editor of The Shoreline, a volunteer Guardian ad Litem in Carteret County representing children in foster care, and previous Director of Editorial Systems and Support at U.S. News and World Report. Everyone gathered around a table that had been especially set up with a small jar for everyone and the ingredients for the hand scrub sugar, peppermint and lemon essential oils and Dawn Oil of Olay Hand Renewal dish detergent. Janie demonstrated the technique for mixing the hand scrub, and each member had a chance to make her own jar to take home. At the business meeting that followed, Barbara Yankauskas distributed the clubs 2015-2016 yearbooks. Barbaras hard work and devotion resulted in a work of art. The yearbook includes a program of events, officers’ photos, members’ information, committee chairmen, club donations and many beautiful photographs. Karen Zaenker reviewed for members many of the upcoming programs for the year. Lana Hathaway discussed members’ trash pick-up schedule and voiced concern about the safety of our members working in the town’s gardens, especially noting cars being driven too fast and too close to workers. It was suggested that we make use of the town’s orange cones. President Kay Howe spoke of the upcoming sale of Christmas wreaths again this season. Sales will start immediately, and orders must be in by October 31. Clark Edwards, husband of member Martha Edwards, will pick up the wreaths from the mountains this year. These assorted green wreaths are still $25, and they can be ordered from any garden club member. Helvi Larson informed us that the Christmas meeting will be held at The Country Club of the Crystal Coast on December 9. We also learned that the Garden Club will celebrate Arbor Day on March 19. The October 14 meeting will be a Garden Club workday. We will be tending all the town’s gardens, followed by a luncheon at the home of Susan King. Our meetings are held every second Wednesday at town hall at 9:30 a.m. for refreshments, followed at 10 by the program of the day. Visitors and guests are always welcome. In October the art gallery will feature the artwork of Elm City resident Cindy Harris. Ms. Harris specializes in pen-and-ink architectural drawings and acrylic paintings. She worked on Main Street grant programs for the city of Wilson, Downtown Nashville (NC), and designed the seal for the town of Stantonsburg. She has been drawing pen-and-ink renderings of homes for over 30 years. Two years ago she revived her love of painting as well, and loves to paint homes, animals, beach scenes, flowers and Christmas scenes, examples of which will be on display in the art gallery. The display case will feature the wood sculptures by former Emerald Isle resident George Brooks. His subjects, shore and sea birds, are very popular with our coastal residents. There will be no artist reception this month. Examples of the artwork of Cindy Harris: “Misty and Baby” and “Santa on the Beach." 'ft
