Req^cling Reminders and Tips By Sarah Williams As we go into our third month of Monday combined trash/recycling collection, everyone seems to be getting into the swing of things. There are a few details to keep in mind with the new schedule. • Please put out your recycling and trash the night before. Having both services on the same day means that Waste Industries needs to start their route earlier than usual. Town ordinances do allow trash to be put out the night before pickup. • Also, please be sure that your trash and recycling can be easily distinguished from each other. Recycling should not be in plastic bags; dry and loose is best. Plastic bags are problematic because they will likely be identified as trash by Waste Industries employees, and they can jam the machines at the recycling facilities. • If you are interested in getting a recycling container, you can pick up a $5-off coupon from town hall for Ace Hardware in Atlantic Beach. Three sizes of blue recycling carts are available (32,48 and 64 gallon), and come complete with the recycling logo. • Even with clearly marked containers, keep in mind that recyclables should not be bagged—with the exception of newspapers in paper bags. A calendar of all pickup dates through the end of the year and collection area maps are available for pickup at town hall or on the town website (townofpks.com) by clicking “Blog” under the “About” tab. Please call town hall at 247-4353 with any questions or concerns. Real Estate News By Amy M. Hahn, Pine Knoll Shores Realty Real estate humor... a true story I was out showing property this past weekend. I had made my calls, spoken with each agent and carefully scheduled each showing. The first three properties were occupied, so after I scheduled the showings, I emailed the schedule to my buyer and explained that we would need to watch our time since we were viewing occupied homes. We arrived at 9 a.m. sharp to view the first condo. Guess who was still home: the owner and his Chihuahua. They rushed out, apologized and left immediately. I can handle that situation and so could my buyer. It’s all good. We were scheduled to see the second property at 9:45 .am. We actually arrived a few minutes early so we walked around the complex to see the amenities. After knocking and ringing the doorbell, I put the key in the doorknob and, to my surprise, the seller quickly opened the door wearing nothing but his underwear. Yikes. He apologized for oversleeping, woke up his wife and, fortunately, before they let us in, they both got dressed. They continued to sit on the bed while we ran through the clutter and mess and dirty laundry all over the place. The third property was scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Because we had spent only two minutes in the previous property, we were running early again. This one was oceanfront, so it was certainly hot a problem for us to relax at the beach for awhile to discuss the other properties and the area. We knocked on the door at 10:30. No answer. Before I could access the key in the lockbox, the seller swung the door open . .. in his underwear. Seriously? How lucky were we to see two men in their underwear on a Sunday morning? My buyer has a great sense of humor, and we actually had a lot of fun laughing and discussing our morning during lunch. But a word of advice to sellers: when you have showings scheduled, and you really want to sell your property—but you have a tendency to oversleep—please sleep in pajamas. Volunteer Recruiter Needed The town of Pine Knoll Shores is looking for an enthusiastic individual to help find volunteers for various town boards and town events. Our committees are always in need of enthusiastic individuals, and we need your help finding them. Being a volunteer recruiter does not require you to attend any meetings, just spreading the word around town and encouraging your neighbors and friends to participate in town events. If you are interested or need more information, please contact Sarah Williams at town hall at 247-4353, ext. 13. Pumpkin Card Party Benefits Hospital By Mary Anne Hotham The 14th annual Pumpkin Card Party will be held on October 27,1-5 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City. This event is sponsored by Carteret Health Care Auxiliary volunteers, a dedicated group of individuals ranging in age from 15 to 85 who help in 26 different areas of the hospital. In addition to providing volunteer support, the auxiliary also raises money for the Hospital Foundation. The new Specialty Pavilion is now an integral part of Carteret Health Care’s ability to more efficiently and effectively meet the health care needs of our community. Enhancements include the new cancer center, improved women’s services, progressive care and critical care areas, as well as enhanced surgical care. Participants at the card party are welcome to play bridge, canasta, dominoes or any card/board game of their choice. Tickets are $15 each and include refreshments, snacks, homemade desserts and door prizes. Tickets for a 50/50 raffle can be purchased at the party. Please join us for an afternoon of fun and games.
