Opening Night for
Pine Knoll Shores
By Phyllis Makuck
Reflections of Pine Knoll Shores
“This is a big night for the Carteret County Historical Society and for Pine Kndll
Shores,” said Michelle Powers, an active member of the Pine Knoll Shores History
Committee and vice president of the Historical Society Board. She was speaking at
the March 11 dedication of the new Rodney Kemp Gallery in the Carteret County
History Museum (formerly The History Place) and the formal opening of the gallery’s
first exhibit, “Beach Town in a Forest: The Story of Pine Knoll Shores.” Approximately
145 invited guests were in attendance.

New Volunteer Recruitment
Coordinator in Pine Knoll Shores
By Sarah Williams
Pine Knoll Shores Town
Manager Brian Kramer
recently announced the
appointment of Craig
Letchner as the town’s first-
ever Volunteer Recruitment
Coordinator (VRC).
A longtime Pine Knoll
Shores property owner, Mr.
Letchner, a retired biomedical
engineer, moved to Pine Knoll
Shores from Grand Rapids,
Michigan, in 2012. Since
settling into his home here, he
has been an active volunteer
in town. He has served as
president for Pine Knoll
Association and volunteered
for the Community
Emergency Response Team
(CERT). He has been the park
captain of Hall Haven since
2013, and was chairman of the
Vietnam Veterans Recognition Dinner in 2014. In addition, he also volunteers at
the Maritime Museum Watercraft Center in Beaufort.
Mr. Letchner believes the town will benefit from having a volunteer coordinator
who can serve as a point of contact for those interested in volunteering. He plans
to establish a database of potential volunteers, with their background and interests,
so that when a position opens up, he will be able to match available volunteers to
the need.
While he is enthusiastic about his position as VRC, Letchner is quick to say that
he will not “meddle with or restrain any group of volunteers, but help recruit and
place individuals who want to volunteer with the organizations that match their
interests.”
Please contact Craig Letchner with questions or comments at pksvolunteers@
gmail.com.
