PKS Celebrates Arbor Day
By Sarah Williams
Did you know... the smallest Tree City community is Sibley, North Dakota,
with a population of 28 people? New York City is the largest with 8.4 million
people. Pine Knoll Shores is somewhere in the middle of these two extremes.
Thanks to Bob Curry and other hardworking Community Appearance
Commission (CAC) members, we have been a Tree City community for the last 16
years. All of us recognize the importance of trees and the importance of effective
urban forest practices.
This is the 40th year of the national program, with more than 3,400 cities
participating. Sixteen of those communities are celebrating their 40th year along
with the Tree City USA program. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by
the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the US. Forest Service and the
National Association of State Foresters. Pine Knoll Shores achieved Tree City

PKS 9th Annual
Kayak for the Warriors Events
By Jean McDanal
Pine Knoll Shores readies for this worthwhile fundraiser
Are your running shoes, kayaks and paddleboards ready for the ninth annual
Kayak for the Warriors (K4TW) events? The events comprise the major fundraiser
for Hope For The Warriors, an organization whose mission is to help those warrior
heroes who have sacrificed so much.
Programs that Hope For The Warriors provides are varied. They include spouse
scholarships; warrior’s wish grants; immediate needs to aid in the recovery process
and transition to life beyond; the Warrior House, which provides adaptive living
quarters for wounded families until long-term arrangements can be made; the
Family Support Program; Above and Beyond, a program designed to provide
professional tools and guidance to move beyond recovery; and-an outreach
program providing education and other resources.
Hope For The Warriors is an organization servicing our wounded that has a
four-star rating from Charity Navigator, which independently investigates and rates
nonprofit organizations to determine transparency and how effective and efficient
the organization is with donated money. Hope For The Warriors consistently
spends 90% to 93% of funds raised to serve our wounded. Only 7% to 10% is
used for administrative costs. Financial data is available at Charity Navigator
(charitynavigator.org). Neither Kayak for the Warriors nor Hop^ For The Warriors
is affiliated with The Wounded Warrior Project.
On Saturday, May 28, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., our 5K Beach Run will begin on
the beach near the Clam Digger Inn in Pine Knoll Shores. The 5K will meander
through the knolls of beautiful Beacon’s Reach. There is also a IK Fun Run/Walk
that will stay on the beach. At 9 a.m. the serious, competitive runners will line up
first, with casual runners next and finally the walkers. The event fee for the 5K is
$25 and includes a t-shirt and water. A $15 fee will be charged for the Fun Walk/
Run. T-shirts will be available for purchase for Fun Run runners/walkers. This year
we will have digital timing by Run the East. To register for either event or to learn
more about it, please sign up at either rooMliiecasliOiMa or by going to our website,
K4TW.org, and clicking on the link to the race.
On Thursday, June 2, the Warrior reception and live auction will be held at the
NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, with doors opening at 6 p.m., and the actual
