At the Aquarium By Shannon Kemp Volunteer Coordinator Chris Carlin retires After more than 10 years as the Volunteer Coordinator for the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, Christine Carlin said goodbye at the end of April. Prior to coming to the aquarium, Ms. Carlin was an ordained minister for 15 years and lived in New Jersey. She was a part-time minister after that and moved to North Carolina to become the aquarium volunteer coordinator at the end of 2005. (Continued on page 21) en Club By Clare Winslow Dressed in old jeans, sweats, hoodies, sneakers, sweaters and caps, members of the Garden Club arrived at the April 13 meeting ready to tackle the towns six gardens captained by Martha Edwards, Karen Zaenker, Lana Hathaway, Barbara Yankauskas, Susan King and Lois Jean O’Keefe. Martha Edwards assigned helpers for each garden and issued reflective safety vests. Lois Jean and Jan Corsello set about clearing the spillway in front of town hall from several years’ buildup of debris and very vigorous weeds. In every garden, pulling up pennywort is a never- ending job. The workers laid down a truckload of pine straw to cover several gardens to help keep moisture from evaporating from the soil during our hot North Carolina summers. Other workers planted bright summer zinnias and pansies. Immediately following the work hours, members were treated to a luncheon at the home of member Gini Stambaugh. The luncheon was prepared by Gini, Linda Langheld, Helvi Larsen and Barbara Williams. JoAnn Shallcross had created a centerpiece of fruit kabobs topped with a tiny white daisy and placed on a bed of green kale. At dessert time members celebrated the birthdays of Barbara Miner and Karen Zaenker with cake baked by member Donna Belanger. At the brief business meeting Karen Zaenker announced that the May bus trip to Raleigh had been cancelled. Instead, the club will take a greenhouse tour of Garner Farms in Newport, followed by lunch at the Infusion Cafe in Morehead City. Arlene Terrell informed members that after the addition of our latest member, Joan Flexman from Pennsylvania, the club’s membership now stands at 40. Arleen Graczewski, chairman of the Blue Star Memorial project, announced that she had contacted the North Carolina Garden Club, the Department of Transportation and town officials of Pine Knoll Shores about the proposed project and had recruited many volunteers to help with future work that such an important project will entail. Jeanette Jenkins is preparing a Pine Knoll Shores Garden Club Facebook page and requested photos from members to post on the site. Meetings are held at town hall every second Wednesday of the month at 9:30 a.m. for refreshments, followed at 10:00 by the program. Guests and visitors are always welcome. This fruit kabob centerpiece created by JoAnn Shallcross looked almost too good to eat. 20 The Shoreline onileiofl2 erIT I May 2016 Former Aquarium Volunteer Coordinator Chris Carlin—Photo by Shannon Kemp From left, Linda Pearson, Susan King and Jean McDanal prepare to attack the Roosevelt Boulevard garden. . -- From left, Arlene Terrell, Mary Hudak and Kay Howe work to improve the town garden on Pine Knoll Boulevard.—Photos by Clare Winslow
