May 5 & 19,2-3 p.m., at the SECU Hospice House, 100 Big Rock Weigh, Newport. Formed to help support caregivers, the group will meet on the first and third Thursday of each month. Senior Life Expo. May 6,9 a.m.-l p.m., at the Leon Mann Jr. Senior Center, 3820 Gallants Drive in Morehead City. Save the date for this once-a-year event which brings county-wide resources for older adults under one roof. Meet with local government representatives, private companies and non-profit organizations to learn about services and programs available in Carteret County. May 7 on the Beaufort waterfront at the NC Maritime Museum at 315 Front Street and the Harvey W. Smith Watercraft Center across the street. The event will include demonstrations on nautical knot tying, constructing ships in a bottle, childrens activities and more. Visitors will be able to view the fishing boat Cricket II, which was the inspiration for the book and movie Jaws. Free and open to the public. Call 728-7317 or visit ncmaritimemuseums.com for more information. Round the Island Race. May 8. This is a non-stop race around the islands that form the harbor in Beaufort. All wooden, traditionally rigged sailing craft are welcome.
