The Dangers of Fireworks (Continued from page 3) Beware of any contractor who tries to rush you or who comes to your home offering assistance. If an offer is only good “now or never,” find someone else to do the work. Avoid contractors, including roofers, who go door-to-door offering services. Instead, get recommendations from friends, neighbors, co workers and others who have had work performed on their homes recently. If possible, get three written estimates for the work and compare bids. Check credentials and contact the attorney generals office and the Better Business Bureau to learn about any complaints against the contractor. Ask to get the contractor’s certificate of insurance directly from their insurance company, not from the contractor. Before work begins make sure you get a written contract that lists all the work to be performed, its costs and a completion date. Read the contract and make sure it includes any verbal promises you may have received from the contractor. Services like cleaning or storage of your belongings often come with extra charges, which can add up, depending on the length of storage. Watch out for price gouging. Under North Carolina law, businesses cannot charge too much for goods or services when a disaster, an emergency or an abnormal market disruption for critical services has been declared or proclaimed by the governor. Under the law, the attorney general’s office can put a stop to price gouging and seek refunds for consumers who paid too much. The courts may also impose civil penalties against price gougers of up to $5,000 for each violation. —Source: ncdoj.gov TOWN OF 100 Municipal Circle • Main - 247-4353 • Fax - 247-4355 • Mon-Fri 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ELECTED OFFICIALS MAYOR Ken Jones - 247-4353, ext. 17 - Two-year term ■ mayorjones@townofpks.com elected in 2015 COMMISSIONERS Four-year terms John Brodman - 726-7643 - elected in 2013 - admin@townofpks.com Larry Corsello - 247-0262 - elected in 2013 - admin@townofpks.com Clark Edwards - 726-7429 - (Mayor pro tempore) elected in 2015 - admin@townofpks.com Fred Fulcher - 808-2569 - elected in 2013 - admin@townofpks.com Ted Goetzinger - 422-9879 - elected in 2015 - admin@townofpks.com TOWN OFFICIALS TOWN MANAGER; Brian Kramer - 247-4353, ext. 16 - manager@townofpks.com TOWN CLERK: Scott Sherrill - 2474353, ext. 11 - admin@townofpks.com FIN & ADMIN: Julie Anderson - 2474353, ext. 14 - janderson@townofpks.com PLANNING & INSPECTIONS: Jim Taylor - 247-4353, ext. 18 - biceo@townofpks.com PUBLIC SERVICES: Sonny Cunningham, Director 2474353, ext. 27 - psd@townofpks.com PUBLIC SAFETY BUILDING - 314 Salter Path Road - 247-2268; Fax - 247-2897 POLICE: Chief Ryan Thompson - 247-2474 - rthompson@townofpks.com FIRE & EMS; Fire Chief Jason Baker - 247-2268 - jbaker@townofpks.com Emergency: Call 911 Emergency Communications Center (ECC) - 726-1911; Public Safety - 247-2474 BHA Events Beth Roy in the Mattie King Davis Gallery. PKS Celebrates Arbor Day (Continued from page 1) recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: having a tree board or department, passage of a tree-care ordinance, having an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and holding an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. On March 18, the Community Appearance Commission was recognized once again for being a Tree City USA partner. The ceremony was held at Memorial Park on a beautiful spring day. CAC Chairman Lois Jean O’Keefe welcomed everyone to the ceremony, and was followed by Mayor Ken Jones, who thanked the CAC for their work and proclaimed March 18, 2016, as Arbor Day in Pine Knoll Shores. He urged “all citizens to celebrate Arbor Day and to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands,” and encouraged all citizens “to plant and care for trees to gladden the heart and promote the well-being of this and future generations.” Ranger Cody Ake spoke to the assembled group and congratulated them for being part of Tree City USA. In closing. Chairman O’Keefe thanked her fellow commission members for their hard work. A dogwood tree was planted behind town hall to commemorate the occasion. Participants can use any paddle-worthy vessel in order to compete. Fun racers who raise $50 or more in sponsors will be given a free t-shirt.
