PINE KNOLL Shores Commissioners meeting By Paige Gillespie The regular meeting of the Board of Commissioners was held on April 13 at town hall. There were 10 members of the public in attendance as well as four via webinar. Mayor Jones was absent; commissioners Edwards, Brodman, Goetzinger and Corsello were present. Mayor pro tern Edwards made several announcements. Mayor Jones will hold a budget briefing on June 1 at 6 p.m. at town hall. The schedule of events for Kayak for the Warriors is as follows: 5K Beach Run and a Ik Fun Run/Walk at Beacons Reach May 28,9-11 a.m.; reception and live auction at the North Carolina Aquar ium at Pine Knoll Shores on June 2 at 6 p.m.; and the kayak/paddleboafd race on June 4 at 10 a.m. Joan Lamson, on behalf of the Age-Friendly Advisory Committee, reported to the commissioners that the property at the intersection of Pine Knoll Boulevard and Highway 58 is back on Ae market. A meeting will be held Thursday, May 5, at 4 p.m. at town hall to discuss what residents’ interests and needs are regarding such a development. Police Chief Thompson surprised Captain Nakamura with a plaque recogniz ing him for his Community Policing program. The Chief said that the program has been very successful and received very favorably by the town residents. Town Manager Brian Kramer reported that the preliminary FIRM maps have been released, with some movement between the V and A designations. He re quested funding not to exceed $5K to hire Moffat 8c Nichol to create a detailed analysis on the FIRM maps to help form a basis for appeal. The information will be given to FEMA prior to the release and will be available to homeowners should they wish to appeal their designation. The motion to approve the funding passed unanimously. Mr. Kramer reported that all smart meters have been installed except for 15 meters in the Sun Bay condominium complex. He and Sonny Cunningham will be meeting with Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative to go over the data, but all in stalled meters are running very efficiently. The Beacon’s Reach beach access repairs are moving along; the west access is completed. Work on the east access has begun and should be finished by May 15. He reported that he is tracking the Municipal Service District bill in the coming General Assembly session. He is also gathering the data Dr. Spruill suggested collecting regarding the Regional Water System and will meet with him in May. He said that the wording of the Draft Material Manage ment Plan is favorable for the town. He also reported that he would be meeting with NCDOT on April 19, hoping to get final approval on the sidewalk plans for the Mimosa to Arborvitae segment. Julie Anderson reported that she will be meeting with auditors for a pre-audit in May and then the auditor comes back in August. Sonny Cunningham reported that 70 smart meters are still to be programmed. Jim Taylor reported that the steel lintel has been replaced on the front of the pub lic safety building. He reported that the brick repair work would begin immediately. Natalie Gibble reported that the Administration Committee would look at whether or not to require reimbursement if an employee receives tuition assistance and then leaves employment. Chief Baker reported that the fire alarm system has been installed in town hall and is operational, but the final inspection is pending. Chief Thompson reported that he would be holding bicycle safety courses on' Wednesday, May 18, at 2 p.m. and Saturday, May 21, at 8 a.m. Scott Sherrill reported that four vehicle assets have been sold. He informed the commissioners during the April 27 meeting there would be a quasi-judicial meet ing on a tree removal issue. Public hearings were held for the Tree Diameter Ordinance and the Approved Grade Ordinance. Both were approved unanimously. Under new business, several issues were on the agenda. Strategic Plaiining Com mittee members George Greene, Bob Warren and John Halada were reappointed, with John Halada appointed as chair. Barbara Holman was appointed to PARC. With this appointment, PARC is at full membership. The Water Ordinance was discussed for the first time. Commissioner Brodman volunteered to work with the Planning Board to study the Development.Line Alternative. The Sign Ordinance was discussed. Scott Sherrill will create a public service video, and information on the ordinance will be available at town hall. The next regular Board of Commissioners monthly meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 11, at 6 p.m. at town hall.
