What’s Up With PARC?
By Jean McDanal
Fourth of July Parade
Hooray for the red, white and blue! The town will be celebrating the Fourth of July with
our annual parade. According to Martha Edwards, the parade will begin at Garner Park at
10 a.m. Please decorate everything you can think of—bicycle, scooter, skateboard, dog and
even Granny. Drinks and ice cold watermelon will be provided at the end of the parade
route.
Annual Beach Sweep
The Town of Pine Knoll Shores once again will partner with the NC Aquarium at Pine
Knoll Shores to clean up the beach. We encourage residents and visitors alike to participate.
This will be the 8th annual post-Fourth of July beach cleanup in Pine Knoll Shores. Last
year we had 22 participants, down from the previous year’s record participation of 44
people.
Where and when: Meet at the Iron Steamer beach access parking lot at 9 a.m., Tuesday,
July 5, for sign-in and a group photo.
What to bring: work gloves, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and appropriate protective
clothing. Plastic garbage bags and ice water will be provided.
Who should come: residents and visitors. Young and old can participate; do what you can
without over-doing.
Program: Working at their own pace, participants will pick a section of beach (for
example, a half-mile segment between public accesses) and pick up any trash they find.
When the trash bag is full or too heavy to comfortably carry, they will place the bag on the
dry sand beach close to the sand fence/vegetation line. Large items (lawn chairs, umbrellas,
awning frames, coolers, lumber, etc.) should also be placed near the fence line in plain
sight. Town staff will cruise the beach in an ATV later in the morning and pick up the trash
collected by participants. Special mention will be awarded to those who find the strangest
items... and strange items there are in abundance.
Special thanks go to Windy Arey Kent, coordinator of educational programs at the
aquarium, to the staff of the aquarium, to PARC members, and to the volunteers of Pine
Knoll Shores.
The next meeting of the Parks and Recreation Committee is Tuesday, July 12, at 9 a.m. at
town hall. All are welcome.
MAKING THE ROUNDS
Sign of the Times
As we present lists that are traveling around the internet, we often offer a
disclaimer that they are for entertainment only, with no guarantee of accuracy
However, some items on the following list, which landed in the email box of a
Shoreline editor recently, ring true.
You know you are living in 2016 when...
• You accidentally enter your PIN on the microwave;
• You haven’t played solitaire with real cards in years;
• You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of three;
• You email the person who works at the desk next to you—or who lives in the
same house;
• Your reason for not staying in touch with friends and family is that they don’t
have email addresses;
• You pull up in your own driveway and use your mobile phone to see if anyone
is home to help you carry in the groceries;
• Every commercial on television has a website at the bottom of the screen;
• Leaving the house without your mobile phone, which you didn’t even have the
first 20 01 30 (or 60) years of your life, is now a cause for panic and you turn
around to go and get it;
• You get up in the morning and go online before getting your coffee; and
• You’re reading this and nodding and laughing—because you see yourself in
this list.
