The second event, the Warrior Reception and Auction, held on June 2 at the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, was attended by over 300 people. Attendees were welcomed with an assortment of food donated by local restaurants, and snacked as they perused and bid on over 100 items in the silent auction. Many members of the Pine BCnoll Shores Garden and Womens clubs prepared baked goods for the dessert table. Thanks to Maureen Danehy for organizing her troop of kitchen workers to keep the food tables refreshed. Auctioneers on Deck took over the live auction festivities. Howard Henderson and Mary Ellen Eurich kept the auction lively and fun. Thirty-four items were presented for bidding, including Panthers tickets, wine, household items, golf packages, a chair and ottoman, a quilt by Karen Zaneker and Cindy Moeller and much more. Thanks to Celeste Lindley for her hard work in organizing this fun evening. We appreciate the staff at the aquarium for all their help, too. Despite dark clouds overhead early on, the weather cooperated and provided a beautiful morning to kick off our signature event, the kayak and paddleboard race on June 4. Set-up at Garner Park began the night before as tents were pitched and other items staged by Dorn Baccollo and his crew. Over 135 racers registered. Garner Park was a beehive of activity early in the morning as Marines from Cherry Point jockeyed kayaks from cars to the water. As onsite registration was taking place, Elaine Holt organized the raffle. Cam and Julie Anderson set up for the lunch, Lee Sullivan took care of t-shirts, a Hope For The Warriors table was set up, as was one for the Navy Federal Credit Union, and much more. Down at McNeill Park, Gary Watkins organized the bike rides. Mayor Ken Jones began the ceremonies with the pledge of allegiance and opening remarks after the presentation of the colors by the US Coast Guard Honor Guard. The prerace briefing was executed by Ted Goetzinger, and then the elite group of racers was signaled to start. These were individuals who felt they could do the 3.2-mile course in 35 minutes or less. The paddleboarders took off in the second group, followed by the more leisurely kayakers and, finally, the fun kayak racers started their event. Several wounded warriors also completed the race. While times were being tallied, the raffle winners were announced and folks enjoyed a barbeque lunch, complete with coleslaw, baked beans and brownies. The winning time this year in the Males 18-64 division was 31:00 posted by Ray Moore. Congratulations to Ray and to the winners in each category. & T^Iease Recycle Female 17 and Under Time Male Under 17 Time Bailey Lowry 42:50 Alexa Dellaratta 82:35 Female 18 to 64 Male 18 to 64 Julia Nicholls 38:33 Ray Moore 31:00 Stephanie Mills 39:12 Joel Carlisle 33:34 Teresa King 39:19 John McCue 34:06 Female 65 and Over Male 65 and Over Dorothy Steenland 39:51 James Nevill 41:08 Martha Edwards 57:55 Shannon Smylie 43:02 Marian Goetzinger 57:55 Walter Geist 43:50 Our overall Warrior winner was calculated by taking a racer’s raw time and subtracting one second for each dollar he or she raised. Paul Leslie collected over $900 that was subtracted from his race time to give him a Warrior time of 22:00. Congratulations, Paul. The complete list of raw times and warrior times can be found on our Facebook page. Kayak for the Warriors, and on our website, k4tw.org. The responsibility for the three events was divided among three very competent and dedicated leaders. They were tasked with making all this work Thanks to Susan and Tommy Toms (5K Beach Run), Celeste Lindley (Warrior Reception and Auction) and Sam Scudder (race day activities). Take a look at the photos taken by Dan Law, Teresa Stanton-Law, Melissa Casper and Amy Nelson on our website and Facebook pages. We also had a drone taking pictures of this event. Thanks, also, for the innumerable hours put in by our volunteers who do this year after year and make it better and better. At press time, the final tally had not been made, but we are gathering all of our information and should have a total soon. Do you have ideas on how the auction could be better, the 5K run, or race day? ff anyone has comments or suggestions, we welcome them. Please send them to suggestions@kayakforthewarriors.org. Believe it or not, planning has already begun for next year. If you are interested in helping in any way, let members of the Parks and Recreation Committee know.
