For the next several months, the town will be continuing to push out
information through The Shoreline regarding the next Flood Insurance Rate Map
(FIRM). North Carolina’s Division of Public Safety has a website that has both
the existing flood zone classifications and the proposed flood zone classifications
(fris.nc.gov/fris/). The town’s public information session on using the Flood Risk
Information System (FRIS) website held July 25 will be available online through the
town’s website, and a helpful video created by the North Carolina Division of Public
Safety (DPS) for Dare County is available on YouTube.com by searching “NC Flood
Insurance Rate Maps 2016.” Even though the video features Dare County, it deals
with the website in general.
The Pine Knoll Shores Radio Station broadcasts 24 hours a day
with weather and emergency info.

When you first go to fris.nc.gov/fris/, you are greeted by a map featuring North
Carolina, Florida, Virginia and Alabama. When you click on North Carolina, the
map will zoom the state, broken down into counties. The most efficient way to get
to your specific information is to type your full address (including ZIP code) in the
provided space and click GO.
The map view begins with the Effective Map, which has been in effect since
about 2003, and is set to show you the Flood Zones. Generally, blue indicates the
AE zone, green/teal indicates the VE zone, yellow indicates the Shaded X, and no
color/natural appearance indicates the X zone. “What You Need to Know About the
New FIRM Release” in the July 2016 issue of The Shoreline explains these categories
(available at townofpks.com; click on The Shoreline/Past Issues).
