GET TO KNOW YOUR COMMISSIONER
Lany Corsello
Byjacquie Pipkin
Commissioner Larry Corsello retired as Vice President of Marketing & Sales and
Specialty Manufacturing of Sumitomo Electric Lightwave (SEL) in the Research
Triangle Park in 1997. His career had taken him on a journey through a half dozen
states before arriving in North Carolina in 1986. After SEL he worked for a couple
of venture capital technology start-up companies and moved to Pine Knoll Shores
in 2000. He looked forward to adopting the boating life on his 39-foot express
cruiser, Sea Trek, which had been at the coast since 1995.
Mr. Corsello obtained a Captain’s 50 Ton Masters license, but soon became
bored and looked for other things of interest to do. Consequently, he became a
yacht broker and also a dock master for the Morehead City Yacht Basin. Locally,
he has also worked for boating and auto-related businesses and currently enjoys
working at Ace Marine Rigging 8c Supply in Morehead City.
Mr. Corsello first ran for the office of Commissioner of Pine Knoll Shores in
2009. That year there were three vacancies on the Board of Commissioners. When
requested by one of the remaining commissioners to consider running for office,
Larry was honored, but, more than that, he saw a need and felt that he could be
of service to the town that he feels is a very special place. Part of his agenda was
to maintain the character of Pine Knoll Shores while at the same time remaining
open minded and fiscally responsible. Now, in the third year of his second term, he
continues to stand by those same principles.
Commissioner Corsello is currently chair of the Finance Committee and a
member of the Administration Committee. In addition, he is on the County Beach
Commission, which oversees beach renourishment. The commissioner has also
been a board liaison for Safety/EMS and the Community Appearance Committee.
Commissioner Corsello admits to liking being in the know, but he explains that the
most satisfying part of being a commissioner is the opportunity to contribute to the
town and its citizens.
Larry met his wife, Jan, while they both lived in New Jersey. Jan is a New Jersey
native; Larry was born and raised in Ohio. They have a son in New Jersey and a
married daughter with two children in Chapel Hill.
Pets have always been an important part of the Corsellos’ lives. Many of you
may remember their rescue dog, Charkey, who lived to be 17. The Corsellos
presently have three rescue cats, one in her 17th year. Jan is an active participant
in the Pine Knoll Shores
community. She is on
the Sea Turtle Patrol, a
member of the Womens
Club and Garden Club,
and a volunteer at the NC
Aquarium at Pine Knoll
Shores. When deciding
where they would like
to retire, the Corsellos
investigated various sea
coast locations but settled
in Pine Knoll Shores
for its unbeachlike lush
environment, sense of
community and easy
beach and boating access.
In closing, when Commissioner Corsello was asked if there were something that
would surprise the readers to know about him, his reply was, “What you see is what
you get.” However, he did share his philosophy for a happy life: accept and deal.
Accept what life brings to you and deal with it straightforwardly and with a positive
attitude.
