Here are a few things going on in PKS this winter. Next dinner with the mayor. The next dinner with Mayor Ken Jones will be in the February 2017 time frame somewhere in the greater Raleigh area, allowing our second-home owners to meet close to home with the mayor and receive an update on our early February annual planning meeting. We will distribute the word on this via email, so if you are not signed up for the town’s email alerts, please do so as directed at the end of this column. Also, if you have a recommendation for any restaurants that have a private area that can seat 35-40 people, please share that with me at manager@townofpks.com. Bogue Banks Water connection. This winter the town will connect the western end of our water system to our neighboring system to the west, Bogue Banks Water Company. BBW provides service to most of Indian Beach, Salter Path and all of Emerald Isle. This connection will serve as an emergency back-up should either system have a catastrophic failure, and will be equipped with a backflow prevention device, which protects either system from contaminants from the other. It also has a metered valve, so that if either system had to purchase large amounts of water from the other over a substantial period of time the quantity could be captured. Cedar Road bio-retention swale project. As this was written, we were installing swales along specific locations in the Cedar Road/Elm Court/Cypress Court area. The intent is to infiltrate storm water in the town right of way before it causes flooding issues. Thanks to the North Carolina Coastal Federation for providing plans and expertise on the installation of this project. Second water line to country club ponds for storm water control. The town is talking to The Country Club of the Crystal Coast (CCCC) and the homeowner associations of Bermuda Greens and Reefstone (BGR) condominiums about the installation of a four-inch drainage line running from the BGR pond to the CCCC pond network. The intent would be to pump down the BGR and CCCC ponds simultaneously in .advance of a major rain event when the water table is already elevated. The water would then be discharged to the sound using the lines installed three years ago. This is important because a hydrologist told the town in 2006 that in the flood- prone east end of town the water table is recharged by the combined water storage capacities of the CCCC and BGR ponds. If we can lower these pond levels substantially prior to a major rain event when we are already saturated WILLIAMS HARDWARE at Morehead Plaza • WINDOW & SCREEN REPAIR • POWER TOOLS & EQUIPMENT • LAWN & GARDEN SUPPLIES • CHAINS & FASTENERS • PLUMBERS & ELECTRICAL • SHARPENING SERVICE Gerber, Buck & Case Knives • Keys Glass Cut to Size • We Cut Thread Pipe wm 7iMZ^.252-726-7158 (we currently track our water table for this purpose), we think we may be able to prevent the major neighborhood-wide flooding we have experienced over the decades. Effects of Hurricane Matthew on the beach. Eollowing Hurricane Matthew, the Carteret County Shore Protection Office surveyed our beach in order to determine the amount of sand lost from the storm. Visual observations of storm effects can be tricky. Many of us see a flat beach immediately after a storm and think it looks great. Others see a reference point at a deck or stairs and form a conclusion based on how many steps are buried (or uncovered) by the storm. The only truly accurate way to know what the storm did to our beach is to conduct a survey. The sand volume is measured from a point atop the dune to a specific point offshore, allowing us to determine that along a linear (east-west) area there is a certain amount of sand, which is measured in cubic yards. Below is a graphic presented to the Carteret County Beach Commission in late October. (Pine Knoll Shores has two representatives on the Commission, Mayor Ken Jones and Commissioner Larry Corsello.) The important number is the “above -12 ft NAVD total cy.” What you see below is that from the point on top of the dune out to -12 feet (which is under water, of course). Pine Knoll Shores gained 146,408 cubic yards. If you have been reading the Shore Protection Office newsletters over the years, you know that our concern is that sand stays within our system. In this case it appears it has. Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative tree removal on Highway 58. The town will meet with the CCEC about its proposal to remove vegetation under the power lines along the south side of the beach road, which would create a major landscape change that would alter the look of Pine Knoll Shores. We will discuss the possibility of a more modest removal directly under the lines or perhaps clearing only to poles with transformers. The Beacon’s Reach Master Association has asked to be included in the discussion. The town is aware that properties along Dogwood, Pinewood, Bay and Knollwood also would be affected. This is going to be a difficult issue. 10th Annual Kayak for the Warriors event. As incredible as this sounds for many of you who have been involved since eight people paddled on a windy day in 2008, in 2017 we will celebrate our 10th Annual Pine Knoll Shores Kayak for the Warriors event. Planning has started for next year’s fundraiser for wounded servicemen and women of all services, and we are pleased to announce that Jean McDanal has stepped up to be the director for the 2017 event. We will again have a three-phased event. Please use the following as a “save the date” tool. • Saturday, May 27—Beach run through Beacon’s Reach (pending approval from the Beacon’s Reach Master Association) • Thursday, June 1—Auction and reception at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores • Saturday, June 3—Kayak race Town email list. If you want to be on the email distribution list for periodic Pine Knoll Shores messages, contact the town clerk at admin@townofpks.com.
