Garaen Club
By Clare Winslow
Outfitted in holiday finery, Garden Club members celebrated Christmas at
their December 14 luncheon meeting at the Country Club of the Crystal Coast.
President Kay Howe thanked members for all the work they had done on the town
gardens during the year and for help in planning and executing the dedication of
the Blue Star memorial to honor our veterans and current service members. She
announced that members had sold 180 evergreen wreaths for our fundraiser this
year, with Betsy McCibbon meriting the honor of selling the most wreaths. Martha
Edwards and her husband, Clark, made the long trip to western North Carolina
again this year to pick up the fresh wreaths.
Second Vice President Jean McDanal reminded us that our roses must be
pruned in December and that other plants and shrubs must be trimmed and
deadheaded in January and February. Members were reminded to turn in their
list of flowers and shrubs planted during the year, which are forwarded to the
North Carolina Garden Club.
First Vice President Martha Edwards again this year conducted a wreath-making
seminar on December 5 at the Pine Knoll Shores firehouse bay She and her
volunteers fashioned 20 wreaths and 67 swags, which were hung at town hall and the
marinas, as well as at the head of all streets leading off Salter Path Road. Pine Knoll
Shores surely looked like Christmas Town for the holidays.
The club voted in new member Jo McGovern. She is the fifth new club member
this year, joined by Judy Thorne, Barbara Holman, Toni Cox and Libby Gallagher.
During the luncheon, Kathy Tanner played piano while members feasted and then
enjoyed several mind teaser Christmas games. Heaped up in a large pile on the

sidelines were donations of cans and boxes of food for Marthas Mission. Monetary
donations were also collected for the domestic violence program. The club made a
generous donation in late November to Project Christmas Cheer to help member
families enjoy a happy Christmas.
We look forward to hearing LaVar Jensen from Carolina Home and Garden
speak at our January 11 meeting. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of
each month at 9:30 a.m. for refreshments, followed by the program of the day at 10.
