PKS History Exhibit (Continued from page 1)
The Newsome Award is named for Albert Ray Newsome, professor of history at
the University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill and a former secretary of the North
Carolina Historical Commission, who was a strong advocate for the study and
preservation of local history. The award named in his honor recognizes outstanding
achievements in preserving local history by member organizations.
The federation is a nonprofit organization operating under the auspices of
the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. In 2016 the
federation honored both the CCHS for the quality of the exhibit and the Swansboro
Historical Association for its community event, the “Haunted Hayride.”
The Carteret County Historical Society has been a member of the federation for
over 20 years, and was a recipient of this award once before, in 1997.
“Beach Town in a Forest” opened to great acclaim in March 2016, and will be on
display at the History Museum of Carteret County through March 2017. The quality
of the exhibit, the response from over 4,000 visitors who have viewed the exhibit to
date, and the exemplary collaboration of the Town of Pine Knoll Shores, its History
Committee and the CCHS prompted a member of the CCHS Board of Directors
to nominate the exhibit for consideration for this statewide history award. The
Federation of North Carolina Historical Societies considers submissions from its over
100 member organizations for a project, event, exhibit or significant achievement that
furthers knowledge of North Carolina’s heritage.
The exhibit provides insight into the individuals and events that formed the
foundation for the development of Pine Knoll Shores. Visitors meet those who
stopped, settled and carved out a town from 2,000 acres of an isolated barrier island.
The exhibit includes immersive environments and interactive components to tell the
story of the evolution of Pine Knoll Shores. It includes whimsical elements, such as a
life-sized alligator, to engage young and older visitors alike.
The Pine Knoll Shores History Committee members—Walt Zaenker, PhyUis
Makuck, Martha and Clark Edwards, Jean Macheca, Michelle Powers and Ted
Lindblad—completed extensive research into the town’s origins. Committee members
Walt Zaenker and Phyllis Makuck wrote the narrative, and other committee members
assisted in sourcing artifacts, props and memorabilia and hanging the exhibit.
CCHS Executive Director Steve Anderson designed the exhibit, selected appropriate
artifacts and coordinated the project. A local firm. Coastal Marketing, provided
design guidance, fabricated the hanging narrative panels and assisted with selection
of images. The Pine Knoll Shores Board of Commissioners supported the committee’s
efforts throughout the process. The collaboration of this team of dedicated residents,
town officials, professionals and amateur historians created an award-winning exhibit.
If you have not seen the exhibit as yet, be sure to put it on your New Year’s
resolutions list. The exhibit will only be available until March 31. The exhibit is open
to the public at the History Museum of Carteret County, 1008 Arendell Street in
Morehead City. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday and the first Saturday
of the month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Contact the museum directly to confirm
dates and hours at 247-7533, or visit the website at carterethistory.org. For more

violin virtuoso.” Tickets are available online at carteretartsforum.com for $35 each,
