Project Christmas Cheer 2016
By Phyllis Makuck
Project Christmas Cheer (PCC) makes Christmas merry for Carteret County
families who may otherwise go without during Christmas. Thanks to all who
helped in 2016—PCC staff and volunteers, churches, other organizations and
hundreds of individuals who sponsored angels or donated money—the effort was a
success. Christmas Cheer reached 446 families with a total of 867 children as well
as 115 seniors.
Locally, for the 6th year, St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church and Shepherd
of the Sea Lutheran Church co-sponsored a public Angel Tree site in Atlantic
Beach. With the help of over 20 volunteers and 100+ individuals who sponsored
angels or donated money, the Shepherd of the Sea site made Christmas merry for
180 children.

Great Backyard Bird Count
By Yvette Bannen
Attention bird lovers; it is time again to count the birds that you see in and
around your yard.
Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon
Society, the Great Bacl^ard Bird Count (GBBC) was the first online citizen-science
project to collect data on wild birds. This is an annual snapshot of the distribution
and abundance of birds in February.
This year the bird count will be from Friday, February 17, to Monday, February
20. Information is available online at gbbc.birdcount.org as well as instructions
and a tally sheet for the most common species for the locality where you will be
observing.
In 2016, participants in more than 130 countries counted 5,689 species of birds
on more than 162,000 checklists.
This is a fun activity for all ages on a holiday weekend—so get your binoculars
and bird book and start counting.
Note: We are interested to know how many people in Pine Knoll Shores participate
in the bird count Please send an email to shoreline@townofpks.com to let us know
about your observations.—The Editors
