At a brief business meeting. President Kay Howe welcomed everyone present, especially new members Jo McGovern, Lisa Park and Libby Gallagher. Ms. Howe informed members that she had ordered extra bundles of evergreen wreaths for the club to sell for the Christmas holidays. She reminded members that at 5:50 p.m. that day the club would be presenting the official Blue Star Memorial plaque to the town of Pine Knoll Shores at town hall and invited everyone to the presentation. She also informed us that Treasurer Susan King and Blue Star Memorial Chairman Arleen Graczewski had attended the District 11 meeting of the North Carolina PKS License Plates Available Decorative Pine Knoll Shores license plates have been developed to promote the Outstanding natural resources and endless recreational activities of one of North Carolina’s most attractive areas—a community that is a combination of sandy beaches, maritime forest and sound side marshes. Bruce Beasley, a summer resident for four years and a nonresident member of ffie Pine Knoll Shores Planning Board had seen a constant barrage of license plates. Window stickers and t-shirts from other coastal communities, and was passionate ^out finding a way to highlight the many attributes of Pine Knoll Shores and the special place that it is. He used his 30 years of marketing with the Wilson Chamber of Commerce to create a plate design depicting sound and salt marshes with ocean shoreline, an abundance of trees in the maritime forest, and seagulls that were taken from the image of the Pine Knoll Shores town seal. The license plates are $20, with proceeds going to the Parks and Recreation Committee, and are available at the town hall. In addition tc the two awards that the club won last month, it also received two additional awams from the Garden Club of North Carolina—the North Carolina Garden Club “reports” award and the award for supporting Tomorrow’s Legacy. Ms. Graczewski informed us that lighting was being arranged for our Blue Star Memorial at the corner of Pine Knoll Boulevard and Salter Path Road. Vice President Jean McDanal announced that the club had worked for 464 hours at the nine town gardens this year, planting, weeding, mulching and pruning. At the conclusion of the meeting President Howe thanked her board members for their tremendous help during the year and recounted memorable meetings, including the project where we all created shell flowers from beach shells, and the session in which we learned about succulents at Redfearn’s Nursery in Cedar Point. Highlighted above all, however, was our installation of the Blue Star Memorial, with an unforgettable ceremony attended by local, state and military officials, veterans, and even a kilted bagpiper, followed by a reception at town hall. Garden Club meetings are held at town hall on the second Wednesday of every month at 9:30 a.m. for refreshments, followed by the program at .10. Guests and visitors are always welcome.
