April 15, 1946 THE MILL WHISTLE Five A bit of fast action during the game between Fieldale High school and Mayodan High school, which was won by Fieldale, in the 20th annual Winston-Salem Journal- Sentinal Northwest Basketball Tournament in March. The Fieldale boys, termed by Winston-Salem sports writers as “a smart boys’ cage team” were sensational in the tournament in which 117 of the best high school teams in this section of the country took part. It has been correctly named “the world’s largest high school tournament” and the Fieldale team won an enviable place in the hearts of basketball fans and players all over the section. Incidentally, the Fieldale boys had won 39 straight games during the past two years before losing to Kannapolis in the finals at Wins ton-Salem. While no effort is made to detract from the victory of Kannapolis it must be said that the Fieldale boys, who usually shine at converting fouls into points, were far off during this final gam.e, making good only seven out of 17 attempts, while Kannapolis made good 11 out of 16 tries. So, had the Fieldale boys been up to par Hhe score—39 to 35—might have been different. F Another unusual thing was that Coach Russell made no substitutions whatever in the first, the semi-final, and final games. In these days of lightning substitutions this is a mighty unusual record. All praise to these boys who accomplished it. The games won, in the order played: Fieldale 33, Methodist Children’s Home 22; Fieldale 43, Reeds 18; Fieldale 33, Mayodan 17; Fieldale 41, Granite Quarry 20; Karastan News By Doris N. In this final game for the championship the two contesting teams represented “the two largest towel man ufacturers in the world.” We lost, but that does not detract one v/hit from the glory and honor the Fiel dale boys won. We’re proud of them and of the gallant fight they made.
