Eight THE MILL WHISTLE May 13, 1946 Plans Completed For Two Softball Leagues On Monday night, April 29, a joint meeting of the Church and Commercial Leagues sponsored by the local Y. M. C. A.’s met at the Central “Y” to dis cuss the newly adopted By-laws and make final preparations for the opening of the League. League President Frank Suttenfield presided during the meeting. At the present time the Church League is composed of seven teams: Spray Baptist, Leaksville Methodist, Riverview Presbyterian, Second Chris tian, Rock Church, First Presbyterian of Leaksville, and First Baptist of Leaks ville. Representatives of each of these teams decided that the Church League would officially open Tuesday, May 14, and that entries would close May 7. The Commercial League at present has four teams with two teams pend ing. The m.embers at the present time are Chandler’s Drug Co., Murphy & Mabes, Rayon Mill, and Red Men’s Lodge. It was officially decided that this League will open Monday, May 13. The Church League will play all games on Tuesdays and Fridays of each week, while the Commercial League will play their games on Mondays and Thursdays. Following is the first half schedule of the Church League. The schedule for the Commercial League is delayed pending the entrance of additional teams. Powell is strictly a Draper man, having been born there and worked there most of his life. Worked in Swannanoa mills, Asheville, for several years, retiu-ning to the Blanket mill in 1925. Has held several responsible positions in the Blanket mill. His present job is a loom fixer in the Blanket mill. As a young man was a good athlete. Alpheus D. Pratt was born in Leaksville, N. C., and after attending local schools started working for Marshall Field and Company in February, 1915, in General Office. Has worked as machine fixer in Finishing mill. Transferred to* Draper Office as Cashier and Raw Material Clerk in 1927 and is still on that job. Member of the 25-Year Club with approximately 31 years of continuous service. Is an expert wood carver. John W. Price was born in Henry County, Virginia. Worked for a construction company and for Spray Cotton Mill. Employed as a night foreman in Nantucket mill January 1, 1906. Promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Nantucket and Lily mills in 1925. Made Superintendent of Suiting mill August 15, 1932. Transferred onl October 25, 1937, to head of Salvage Department and is still on that job. Member of 25-Year Club with about 40 years continuous service.
