The houses will be erected as fast as the construction crews can put them up. It is estimated than an average of about two houses |per day will be erected. Work began late last week on several of the houses which are to be erected on Merriman Street in the neighbor hood of the G. C. Swinney home at Dra per. Others are' to be built at various points in Leaksville-Spray and sur rounding countryside. The houses are being erected by the Zerker Construction Company, Wash ington, D. C., and the work has been organized into various phases. The first crew digs the foundation and pours the concrete piers. Next comes the erection crew which puts the house up and con nects the plumbing. The electrical crew follows and then the clean-up and painting crew finishes its work and the house is ready. The first unit obtained by the Com mission was erected in the Newtown section of Draper and was used as a sample. This house was purchased by Stuart T. Maynard, Draper "Y. M. C. A. house secretary, and has been occupied for several weeks. Complete with all wiring, plumbing fixtures, a heating unit, kitchen range' and hot water tank, the houses were brought here from Alexander Park, Portsmouth, Va., where they were used during the war as homes for shipyard I workers. The erection of these houses will bring relief to veterans who have lived in cramped quarters since their return from service. Absentee Meter Figures Are Now More Up To Date Absenteeism Comments on Meter Indicate Much Interest in Reducing Absenteeism in Local Mills Re-appearing in this issue of The Mill Whistle is the ABSENTEE METER after an absence of a few issues. The meter was discontinued for a time while efforts were made to bring the figures closer up to date so that more recent weeks could be shown in the meter. This has been worked out to seme ex tent and the meter is now appearing once more. During the period while the meter was not published there were comments from many employees noting the omis sion. This was believed to indicate that there is much interest among employ ees in reducing absenteeism so t’nat their mill would make a good showing.
