MILL WHISTLE Issued every Two Weeks by andfor the Employees of Marshall Field kf Company Mnc., Manufacturing Division, Spray, North Carolina Volume Five Monday, September 30, 1.946 Number Six Woolen Mill Weave Room Employees Go 8^2 Years Without Lost-time Accident Eight and one-half years, or over two million man-hours, without a lost-time accident—that’s the outstanding record of the employees of the Woolen Mill Weaving Department. The record is exceptional considering that over 130 people have worked around 92 looms for that length of time without loss of time due to injury. Approximately four years of the time was under war-time strain with the weave room running three shifts, six days a week. A certificate of merit was awarded the Woolen Weave Department at the end of 1944, at which time the record stood at six years, 10 months, and seven days. Since that time and up until September 1 of this year, 20 months more of safe work have been added. Such a record shows that every employee is thoroughly imbued with the safety spirit. It means that in addition to doing their production jobs well, the weave room employees have practiced safe work habits, have maintained good house keeping, and have been prompt to report minor injuries and to get first aid to prevent infection. Figures just released by the National Safety Council show that our Woolen Mill’s record in 1945 was 43% better than the average of the 14 wooolen mills of comparable size reported to the Council. It is significant that our Woolen Mill during the war won the Army-Navy “E,” an award that could easily have been lost through a poor safety record. The Woolen Mill won the award three times and in addition received the Minute- Man Flag for its purchase of war bonds. The entire Manufac turing Division congratulates the Woolen Mill on this record. Fire Prevention Week Fire Prevention Week will be observ ed in the Manufacturing Division with a comprehensive program in which all mills will participate. Waymon Smith, of Marshall Field and Company, by vir tue of being Fire Chief of the town of Leaksville, is general chairman of the fire prevention program for the week of October 6-12. An organization to carry on the pro gram of fire prevention was.formed at a meeting of the Tri-City Fire Marshalls (Continued on Page Eight)
