‘THE MILL WHISTLE December 23, 1946 Fieldale Sanitary District Assured Company Contributes $225,000 As Its Share Based On The Property Evaluation Within The District FIELDALE, VA.—For some time the citizens of Fieldale have been interested in securing a water and sewerage sys tem for the town. The Fieldale Service Club, an organization of business and professional men headed by S. S. (Sut) Flythe, got behind the project and ap pointed a committee to study the mat ter. With Mr. Flythe as chairman the committee was composed of Rev. T. A. Pollard, B. I. Adkins, B. N. Whitten, N. M. Harlowe, James Carrico, and M. A. Eggleston. Preliminary surveys were made by engineers and it was estimated that the system would cost approximately $300,- 000. It was found that a bond issue in such an amount would be impossible for a sanitary district under the Vir ginia law. Home Owners Pledge The conamittee then canvassed the owners of homes in the proposed san itary district to see if the citizens were interested enough to pay their share of the original cost in cash. There are approximately 300 homes in the Fieldale Sanitary District and 285 of the owners of these homes signed cards pledging themselves to pay a maximum of $300 each for the construction of the system. The pledges totalled $75,000. The citizens then petitioned the Cir cuit Court of Henry County for the cre ation of the Fieldale Sanitary District. The court heard the matter and the san itary district was created by order of the court. Company Is Approached Thereupon, the committee approached Marshall Field and Company and stated that they would pay $75,000 in cash to- w'ard the cost of the system if Marshall Field and Company would pay $225,000. This is based on the proportion of the taxable value of the property owned by Marshall Field and Company and other property owners within the district. The Company accepted the challenge and is contributing to the board of sup ervisors of Henry County $225,000 for the exclusive use of the Fieldale San itary District to be used for the con struction of a water and sewerage sys tem. The contribution of the Company is contingent upon payment to the board of superviors by the citizens of Fieldale the sum of $75,000. The agreement specifies that so much of the money as is necessary is to be used for the con struction of a water and sewerage sys tem in Fieldale and that any balance Company Land Being Sold To Employees For Residences At the request of many employees that the Company make lots available for purchase by them so that they might build homes, the Company, in order to encourage the building and ownership of homes, has had some of its property in Leaksville, Spray, and Draper subdivided in lots which are now available for sale to employees.
