Event At Tri-City Baseball

August 9 through 14 have been set
as the dates for the Carolina-Virgmia
Y. M. C. A. Invitational Softball Tour
nament to be played at the Tri-City
baseball park. Sixteen outstanding
teams in North Carolina and Virginia,
within a 75-mile radius of the Tri-
Cities, have been invited.
The tournament will be sponsored by
the Leaksville-Spray Y’s Men’s Club
and the Draper Y’s Men’s Club. Four
games will be played on each date
starting at 5:00 p. m. The semi-flnals
will be held Saturday afternoon, Aug
ust 14, and the championship game will
be played Saturday night. Admission
will be $1.50 for a season ticket or 35c
admission at the door on each date.
There will be 84 individual awards
given and one large championship
trophy.
The tournament committee is com
posed of Ernest Ward, chairman; Roy
McCray, J. O. Burnette, Homer King,
Lav Cheek, Joe White, J. B. Gentry,
and Kemp Newman.
John Arnall Named
Assistant Supt. Of
Finishing Mill
John W. Arnall, general foreman of
the Finishing Mill since October, 1945,
was promoted to assistant superintend
ent of the Finishing Mill effective July
1.
Arnall is a native of Coweta County,
Ga., and graduated with a B.S. degree
in textile engineering from the Georgia
School of Technology. He was connected
with Eagle and Phenix Mills, Columbus,
Georgia, from 1930 to 1937; and from
1937 to 1945, he was with Dan River
Mills, Danville, Va.
He is a member of the Leaksville-
Spray Exchange Club and of the
American Association of Textile Chem
ists and Colorists. His favorite sports
are tennis, golf and fishing. He is mar
ried to the former Miss Pearl Evelyn
Moncrief, and they have two daughters,
Helen Carolyn, 9, and Margaret Hay-
don, 4. They live on Country Club Road.

The Recreation Park is the center of
softball activities in the Spray-Leaks-
ville area. Teams in the adult church
league and the intermediate church
league use it and various mill teams
play there. Murphy and Mabes, an in
dependent ball club, uses the Spray
Recreation Park as their home grounds.
During this season, Murphy and Mabes
have been bringing into the local com
munity outstanding softball teams from
North Carolina and Virginia.

Spray Recreation Park—the com
munity’s play area—is providing fun and
relaxatipn to thousands as the Y. M.
C. A.’s summer outdoor recreation pro
gram reaches the midpoint of the sea
son. The Recreation Park is operated
by the Central Y. M. C. A. and the
facilities are available to the entire
