WHISTLE Copyright, 1951, Marshall Field Sc Company Issued Every Two Weeks By and For the Employees oI Fieldcrest Mills, Divi sion o£ Marshall Field & Company, Inc., Spray, North Carolina OTIS MARLOWE Editor No. 9 Monday, Nov. 12, 1951 Vol. X Life In America It has often seemed to us that what it means to be an American is not suf ficiently understood by many citizens of this country. Americans know their Anthem and their Declaration; they have read the Constitution; they have stood in the Lincoln Memorial or the Alamo or at Plymouth Rock and absorbed some of the spirit which permeates our shrines. But it is sometimes difficult for the average citizen to relate these great documents and these historic spots to the everyday experience of being an American. After all, being an Ameri can must be understood in terms of living, of working, of playing in Ameri ca and in the American way. Few Americans fully understand how this way is a direct heritage of an American way which has existed here from the times of the earliest explorers. A unique effort has' just made the American heritage clearer than perhaps it has ever been before. Marshall B. Davidson, an historian and authority on American folk-ways, has been at work for the last six years on a project jointly sponsored by Houghton Mifflin, Boston publishers, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The result is' a just published two volume work—LIFE IN AMERICA—-which tells the whole story of America from its earliest beginnings to the present day. The story is told in 1200 pictures and in a quarter of a million words. These volumes are unique for the way in which text and illustrations are blended, the one complementing the other, the two together telling the American story more clearly and more dramatically than it has been told before. To us, today, the story of LIFE IN AMERICA is of far more than historic importance. This story of a dream, of a Utopia which came true, of a freedom to live, to work, to worship, to play is probably more important than all the stories of our Presidents and of our battles. For this is the story of a way of life that is seriously threatened by a totalitarian way which would de stroy those freedoms. It is hoped that we are the strongest nation on earth today, but it is certain that however strong we may be, we are not as strong as we could be if this story were known and fully understood by Americans.
