MILL WHISTLE Safety Rules Contest In FuU Swing; Many Cash Prizes Alread^Received Harold W. Whitcomb, assistant gener al manager, is shown as he dialed the first call over the new dial telephone System in use at the mills. New Telephone System In Operation At Mills The new Fieldcrest Mills private branch telephone exchange was put into operation Monday using the latest type dial telephone system. Under the new arrangement all calls between mills and offices are handled automatic ally without going through the Central Telephone Company’s switchboard on the Boulevard, Leaksville, or the Field crest operator’s board. During the first day of operation, a total of 1900 calls Were carried by the equipment without attention by any operator. The Fieldcrest installation is unusual inasmuch as the three private exchang es at the mills are tied together so that all intra-company calls are handled automatically between points in Leaks- j ville-Spray and Draper. The main ex change is located on the second floor of the Nantucket Building in Spray, With smaller exchanges at the Karas- tan Mill, Leaksville and the Blanket Mi” in Draper. Also located in the Nantucket building is the Fieldcrest operator’s switchboard which handles all long distance calls and incoming outside local calls. The exchange in the Nantucket building is connected with the Central (Continued on Page Five) Store To Sell Rayon Yard Goods, Remnants Effective Monday, March 31, Field crest employees may purchase rayon yard goods at the Employees Storo- Under the new arrangement, the Store will have samples from which selections may be made and an order placed. The Store will obtain the goods from the mill and the purchaser may then pick up the goods at the Employees Store. A new plan in regard to remnants also v/ill become effective March 31. The Rayon Mill will send remnants to the Store each Monday. These may be bought across the counter at the Em ployees Store so long as the supply lasts. No refunds and no returns are per mitted on either rayon yards goods or rayon rGmnants. Heretofore, purchasers of the rayon materials have been going to the mill to make their selections of yard goods and remnants, then picking up and paying for their orders at the Em ployees Store. This practice is now dis continued. Company Will Cease Manufacture Of Lace Curtains. Tablecloths Plans to discontinue manufacture of lace curtains and lace tablecloths, and to dispose of its lace operation at Zion, Illinois, have been announced by Field crest Mills. , i. iQ Company officials stated that sale of the plant as a going concern is under discussion with a potential purchaser, and that failing sale on this basis, the operation would be liquidated m the next 60 to 90 days, upon completion of work now in process. The decision to discontinue the opera tion was attributed to difficulties of operating a plant so widely separated from the main Fieldcrest Mills in the North Carolina-Virginia area and to the fact that the items made in the Zion plant no longer fit well with the co ordinated merchandising of Fieldcres textile products to retail stores and dis tributors. Several employees already have re ceived cash prizes in the safety rules quiz contest now in full swing at all mills. H. E. Williams, Safety Director, said the contest is meeting with fine response and he believes “this emphasis on the safety and health rules will have :> beneficial effect throughout the or ganization.” The contest began March 3 and con tinues through June of this year. The procedure calls for a daily visit to each plant by a designated person in most cases the mill manager or super intendent — who asks an employee to state one of the Fieldcrest safety and health rules and the penalty for viola tion. If the employee answers cor rectly he is handed a dollar. If he fails to answer correctly the $1 00 goes into a jackpot to be awarded at the close of the contest. Employees who miss the first time but answer correctly a second question will par ticipate in the drawing for the jackpot. It is not required that the rules be quoted word-for-word but the employee must be able to state the essential mean ing of the rule and the penalty for violation.
