Captains Named For “Y” Membership Campaign Mills Are Host To
Sears, Roebuck & Co.
Sales Contest Winners
As the prize in a sales contest 10 do
mestics section managers from Sears,
Roebuck & Co. retail stores last week
enjoyed a trip to Fieldcrest Mills where,
with headquarters at the Fieldale Lodge,
they toured the mills and made side
trips to Philpott Dam and Fairystone
Park.
The group came to Danville from
Chicago in a private plane belonging to
Sears, Roebuck & Co. They arrived
Tuesday evening; the plane waited for
them and flew them back to Chicago
Friday afternoon.
Sears had offered an expense-paid
trip as a reward for the group’s in
creasing sales of the better styles and
gift merchandise. After discussion of
trips to New York or Chicago it was de
cided to visit Fieldcrest Mills where
the pleasure trip could Vie combined
with observations in the mills and our
quality control laboratories.
Accompanying the winners were W. J.
Troost, Chicago, Sears’ retail sales man
ager; D. D. Helvie, Sears’ sheet buyer;
and C. E. Moulton, head of our sheet

2:45 p. m. to 4 p. m. on Mondays, Wed
nesdays and Fridays.
R. L. Wilkes continues as personnel
manager for the Spray area, with
responsibility for administering group
insurance. United Mutual Aid, work
men’s compensation and other employee
benefits for all mills. He will have
supervision over the maintenance of
records pertaining to the Retirement
Program and the 25-Year Club.
Messrs. Thomas and Wilkes will re
port to Jones W. Norman, personnel
director.
Leaksville Personnel
Office Will Be Closed
For reasons of economy, effective
May 1, the Personnel Dept, has arrang
ed to close Leaksville Personnel Office.
All employments for the Bedspread and
Karastan mills will be handled through
the Spray Personnel Office. This should
not seriously inconvenience anyone
since all physical examinations and pre-
employment testing have been done at
Spray. This has in the past necessitated
a trip to the Spray Personnel Office for
all employments.
J. O. Thomas, Leaksville personnel
manager, will be transferred to Spray
and will be in charge of employments
for the Leaksville and Spray mills.
However, an office is being prepared
at the Leaksville gatehouse where Mr.
Thomas will be available to employees
of the Bedspread and Karastan mills
who desire information or assistance on
personnel matters other than employ-
Radio Series Ends
The Fieldcrest Show ended its sixth
yearly series over Station WLOE Sun
day afternoon, April 27 in a special pro
gram highlighted by a message by
Harold W. Whitcomb, assistant general
manager. As in the past the “live” pro
gram will be suspended during the sum
mer months.
Carolina Council Names
Officers For New Year
In the election of officers for the
Carolina Cooperative Council at the
meeting April 17, Otis Marlowe was
elected president, succeeding Jones W.
Norman. J. B. Lamar was elected vice-
president and J. K. McConnell was re
elected secretary. R. L. Wilkes was
named assistant secretary and J. G.
Commins was elected a member of the
program committee.
Chairmen of the remaining commit
tees were named as follows: attendance,
Joe Foster; refreshment, Melvin Moore;
and constitution, S. E. Adcock.
The new officers will be installed at
the September meeting. The election
is usually held at the May meeting just
before the Council suspends its activi
ties for the summer months. Officers
were elected at the April meeting this
year because of a special program plan
ned for the May meeting to be held m
the Leaksville high school auditorium.
