Marshall Field & Co.
Contributes $50,000
To Hospital Project
The board of Directors of Marshall
Field & Company last week authorized
gift of $50,000 to the Tri-Cities to help
make it possible for the communities
to obtain a public-owned general hos
pital. A grant of $45,000 had been made
earlier by the Duke Endowment.
The combined gifts will enable trus
tees of the newly-chartered Tri-City
Hospital, Inc. to purchase Leaksville
Hospital from Drs. C. V. Tyner and
Kenan Casteen as a first step leading
to construction of a new community
hospital in a central location. The $5,-
000 remaining after the trustees exer
cise their option to buy the present
hospital foi $90,000 wili. be 7 used ' for
operating expenses,-possibly to be sup
plemented by public subscription.
In announcing the gift by Marshall
Field & Company, Chairman Hughston
M. McBain said:
“There is no way, of course, to
express the friendship this company
will always feel for everyone at Field
crest Mills. But, as a token of our
feeling, I take great pride in this gift
of $50,000 from Marshall Field &
Company toward the cost of fine hos
pital facilities for the three cities.
“While this gift is not a part of the
financial agreement that separated
Fieldcrest from our company, I hope
you will accept it as proof that Mar
shall Field & Company will never
really feel separate from the people,
the communities of Fieldcrest.
“We wanted to express our lasting
friendship with more than words. We
hope this hospital will be an every
day reminder of our feelings and will
serve you for years to come. We hope
this gift gives you as much pleasure
as it does all of us at Marshall Field
& Company.”
Trustees of the community hospital
are going forward with plans to build a
new 50-bed public hospital in a central
location in the Tri-Cities for which it is
believed approximately two-thirds the
cost will be paid by federal and state
funds under provisions of the Ilill-
Burton Act.
