As Check Was Written For Purchase Of Leaksville Hospital
trustee
The Tri-Cities took the first step to
ward securing a modern, public-owned
community hospital December 22, when
trustees of the newly chartered Tri-City
Hospital, Inc. purchased the plant and
physical properties of Leaksville Hospi
tal from Dr. C. V. Tyner and the estate
of the late Dr. Kenan Casteen.
A gift to the community of $50,000
from the Marshall Field & Company,
and a $45',000 grant from the Duke En
dowment, enabled the trustees, acting
on behalf of the community, to purchase
the hospital which will be operated as
a public institution until a new 50-bed
hospital can be built in a central loca
tion.
The trustees are studying the project
of a new hospital for which it is believ
ed approximately two-thirds of the cost
can be obtained from federal and state
sources under the Hill-Burton Act.
Harris Nelson, Sr., treasurer of the
Tri-City Hospital, is shown above as
he wrote the check for $90,000 with
which the hospital was purchased.
