Winners Of Sears Sales Contest Visit Mills Domestics section managers from Sears, Roebuck and Co. retail stores, who were winners in a sales contest, enjoyed a visit to Fieldcrest Mills on Wednesday and Thursday, May 9 and 10. Accompanied by Sears officials, the contest winners traveled in a Sears private plane, which remained at the Danville, Va., airport during their visit to Fieldcrest. With headquarters at the Fieldcrest Lodge at Fieldale, the group made tours of all of our domestics mills in the Tri-Cities and Fieldale, with a side trip to Philpott Dam. Sears gave the expense-paid trip as a reward for the section managers’ increasing sales to the highest percent age above their quotas in the contest. The pleasure trip was combined with the mill visit to give the sales people an opportunity to observe our produc tion processes and quality testing pro gram. In the group were: Manley P. Medbery Elected Rotary Club President E. W. Medbery, vice-president of Fieldcrest, has been elected president of the Leaksville-Spray Rotary club. He will be installed at the first meeting in July, succeeding Dale C. Cooper. Oth er officers elected to serve with Mr. Med bery are Rev. John C. Whitley, vice- president; T. P. Shinn, re - elected secretary and treas urer; and Homer J. Medbery Vernon, sergeant-at-arms. In addition to the officers, directors of the club include Mr. Cooper, Dr. R. P. Harris and Dr. C. V. Tyner. 50 Years Ago It was at 3:20 p.m. on June 22, 1906 —50 years ago last Friday—that the steam was turned on in the engine room and the Blanket Mill was started up for the first time. The picture at left shows W. A. John son, who was engineer, as he turned a wheel to start up the engine. Mr. Johnson was engineer for a long time before he retired from the mill several years ago. He is 82 years old but remains very active. He puts in a full day every day, looking after his farming interests and supervising mechanical work at Johnson Chevrolet Corp. He has a large famliy of chil dren, most of whom have worked at Fieldcrest. One son, George, is em ployed in the Blanket Mill Shop. The picture was loaned to us by another son.
