R. A. Harris Promoted To Vice-President

Assumes Responsibility For
Manufacturing In Addition
To His Former Duties As
Secretary, Treasurer
Election of Robert A. Harris as vice-
president of Fieldcrest Mills, Inc., has
been announced by President Harold
W. Whitcomb. Mr. Harris, secretary
and treasurer since May, 1955, in addi
tion to those duties was given responsi
bility for manufacturing formerly held
by E. W. Medbery, who resigned from
the Company effective June 30.
Mr. Harris joined Fieldcrest in 1946
after four years of naval service in
World War II. He served as a cost ac
countant, staff assistant in the man
agement offices, assistant manager of
the Blanket Mill, assistant comptroller,
assistant treasurer and secretary and
treasurer.
He is a native of Warren County,
N. C. and attended Campbell College
at Buie’s Creek for two years before
going to the University of North Caro
lina at Chapel Hill. He majored in ac
counting and received his B. S. in com
merce degree in 1939. He was elected
to Phi Beta Kappa and to Beta Gamma
Sigma, national honor society in com
merce.
He was commissioned after attending
midshipman’s training school at Colum
bia University and was commanding
officer of a mine sweeper serving in
both the Atlantic and Pacific. Before
entering the Navy he was an accountant

Fieldcrest Men To Go
To Blue Ridge Meeting
Four Fieldcrest men will attend the
1956 Southern Industrial Relations
Conference at Blue Ridge July 18-21.
Those to go are John Harkey, Blanket
Mill; Harold Squires, Bedspread; Car
son Oakley, Bleachery; and Jones Nor
man, Industrial Relations.
The theme for the 37th annual con
ference is “Human Relations in Ex
panding Industry”. This year’s confer
ence will emphasize the growing need
for a clearer understanding of human
relationships in the development of
human resources, said T. M. Forbes,
textile official of Atlanta, Georgia, who
is chairman of the 1956 conference.
