Harris Elected Head
Of Carolina Council
Robert A. Harris, vice president,
manufacturing, was elected president of
the Carolina Cooperative Council at the
group’s final meeting of the program
year Thursday evening, April 25, at the
Consolidated Central Y. M. C. A.
Elected to serve with Mr. Harris
Were: R. L. Wilkes, vice president, D.
E. Simons, member of the program
committee; Otis Marlowe, secretary;
and Jesse Burton, assistant secretary.
Committee chairmen were elected as
follows: attendance, Dan Squires; ar
rangements, Fred Sizemore; and consti
tution, Norman Young.
J. M. Norman, outgoing president,
presided. The invocation was given by
Paul L. Peterson, general secretary of
Consolidated Central Y.M.C.A. Attend
ance prizes were awarded to William
Joyce (beach towel ensemble) and John
Barber (Acrilan blanket).
William B. Lucas, of the program
Committee, introduced Charles Cullen,
of Charlotte, who spoke on “Eternal
Pury.” His inspirational message on hu-
nian relations was greatly enjoyed.
The Council will open a new program
year in the fall.
Norman Young To Take
Part In UNC Inaugural
Norman Yoiing, assistant superinten
dent of the Bleachery, will participate
in the inauguration of William C. Fri
day as president of the Consolidated
University of North Carolina. In the
^remonies at Chapel Hill May 8, Mr.
^oung will represent his alma mater,
Wabash college, in Crawfordville, Ind.
Wearing cap, gown and hood, repre
sentatives from institutions of higher
learning throughout the U. S., will
niarch in an academic procession. The
representatives will line up in the order
in which their respective colleges were
founded. Following this group will be
the faculty of the Consolidated Univer-
^ty and then the inaugural party itself.
The program will close with a luncheon
at the student union.
Mr. Young received his A.B. degree
from Wabash and his M.S. degree in
^xtile chemistry from the Institute of
Textile Technology, Charlottesville, Va.

Three 51-Year Employees To Retire May 1
Three employees with 51 years of
continuous service at Fieldcrest are
among the 14 persons who will retire
under the Pension Plan effective May
1. The long-service champions are A. D.
Weaver, W. Riley Cover and Annie
Lea, all of the Synthetic Fabrics Mill
Ceremonies honoring the 14 retirees
will be held in the Nantucket confer
ence room at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April
30. Company officials will speak to
the group and the first monthly pen
sion checks will be presented.
To retire, in addition to those men
tioned above, are: J. Gordon Turner,
39 years; George A. Bateman, 37
years, Claude E. Dillon, 35 years*
Susie K. Gilley, 29 years; George w'
Martin, 28 years; Maude Parker, 26
years; and Mary R. Patterson, 21 years.

James P. Bryant, 87,
Oldest Retiree, Dies
James P. Bryant, Fieldcrest’s oldest
retired employee, died unexpectedly at
his home early Monday, April 22.
Death was attributed to a heart at
tack. He would have been 87 years
old May 10. He had been retired since
December 1, 1944—one of the first re
tirements • after the Company pension
plan was put into effect.
He was born in Patrick county, Vir
ginia, in 1870. He had lived at Leaks-
ville for 50 years. Personnel records
show that he worked in the Napping
Dept, at the Finishing Mill as early as
1908. He had continuous service since
1921. He worked most of his years
as a napper operator.
Surviving are two sons and three
daughters. One son, E. A. (Lige) Bry
ant, also is a long-service employee
of Fieldcrest and is a napper operator.
