C., Monday, November 4, 1957 NUMBER 9 Magazine Editor Sees Fieldcrest Operations Miss Florence Byerly, home furnish ings editor of Better Homes and Gardens, the leading magazine in the home furnishings field, was a recent visitor at our mills. She was greatly impressed with our ttiill operations and the leadership that J'ieldcrest has taken in producing quality and fashion products in this industry. Our Research and Quality Control Department was of particular interest to her, as wearing qualities ?nd fine workmanship are equally as important as styling to her more than 4,000,000 readers. Miss Byerly is one of the country’s foremost reporters on decorating trends, and twice she has won the Dorothy Dawe award for her outstanding edi torial accomplishments. Her background of experience prior *■0 joining Better Homes and Gardens ®ight years ago has run the gamut writing sales checks, training salespeople, coordinating buying pro- STams, to decorating model homes for Several fine mid-western stores. All of '■his has given her an amazing amount of insight into the interests of her read ers. We were delighted with the oppor tunity of having Miss Byerly visit the niills and meet more of our Fieldcrest People. Homecoming Queen Miss Hazel Gay Griffin (pictured at '^ight) was chosen homecoming queen at Morehead High School. She was erowned by Schools Superintendent John M. Hough during half-time cere- *nonies at the Morehead-Griffith game Friday night, October 18. The 17-year-old homecoming queen is a daughter of Mrs. Esther S. Grif fin, who is employed in the Finishing t>epartment at the Karastan Rug Mill, and H. H. Griffin, of Cascade, Va. She is a native of Draper and a mem ber of Draper’s First Methodist Church "^here she is a leader in the youth programs conducted by the church. Harris, vice president in charge of manufacturing, was installed as president of the Carolina Cooperative Council at a meeting at Consolidated Central Y.M.C.A. Thursday evening, October 17, opening the Council’s 37th year. Other officials to serve with Mr. Harris during the year are R. L. Wilkes, vice president; Otis Marlowe, secre tary; J. M. Burton assistant secretary; F. W. Klein, W. B. Lucas and D. E. Simons, program committee; Fred Sizemore, chairman of the arrange ments committee; Dan Squires, chair man of the attendance committee; and Norman Young, chairman of the con stitution committee. J. M. Norman, manager of the Kara stan Rug Mill, the outgoing president, installed the new officers and was pre sented the Council past president’s pin by Mr. Harris. Speaker for the program was John K. Minnoch, of Chicago, who entertained with humor and homespun philosophy. (Continued on page seven)
