Personnel Group Will Visit Here
Fieldcrest Mills will be host to a meet
ing of the Personnel Association of the
Greensboro area Thursday evening, May
1. Approximately 50 members of the
association will come to Spray by char
tered bus.
The group will be headed by Guy
Phillips, Jr., president of the association.
Mr. Phillips is secretary and personnel
manager of the Jefferson Standard Life
Insurance Company.

Mr. Gussin comes to the newly-creat
ed position from the Firth Carpet Com
pany where he was director of advertis
ing and sales promotion for the past
nine .years.

Housekeeping Report
The recently completed 19th house
keeping grading inspection report shows
an average grade of 91.8 per cent for all
mills. This is slightly above the weight
ed standard and the highest grade that
has been achieved to date.
In making his report to the Central
Safety Committee, Howard Barton, sec
retary of the management housekeeping
committee, stated, “There is more to
mill housekeeping than housekeeping
for its own sake. Orderliness in the
workplace encourages more careful at
tention to quality and safety.”
Klein Elected Head
Of Carolina Council
F. W. Klein, assistant manager of the
Karastan Rug Mill, was elected president
of the Carolina Cooperative Council at
a meeting at Consolidated Central Y.-
M.C.A. Thursday evening, April 24. He
will take office in the fall to serve for
one year.
To serve with him are the following:

tary, Otis Marlowe, editor of The Mill
Whistle (re-elected); assistant secretary,
Carl Hall, Comptroller’s Department;

Wachovia Chairman Is Speaker
Speaker for the program was Archie
K. Davis, chairman of the board of di
rectors, the Wachovia Bank and Trust
Company, Winston-Salem. He traced
the economic and sociological develop
ment of North Carolina and the Pied
mont area in particular. The State and
section have great opportunities ahead
and will realize them by groups and in
dividuals working together for the good
of all, Mr. Davis said.
W. B. Lucas, of the program commit
tee, introduced the speaker.
William Glidewell, of the Wachovia
staff, accompanied Mr. Davis on his visit
to the Tri-Cities. Other guests of the
Council were B. E. Ivie and Herman Sut-
liff, of the Leaksville Bank and Trust
Company; John Mitchell and Lawrence
Wilson, of the First National Bank; and
G. C. Gammon, of the Home Savings
and Loan Association. J. Frank Wilson,
of the First National Bank of Martins
ville and Henry county, a member of
the Council, also was present.
Retirees Win Attendance Prizes
Robert A. Harris, outgoing president,
presided. The invocation was given by
Ray Warner, of the Automatic Blanket
Mill. W. R. Kiser, chairman of the nom
inating committee, proposed the slate
of officers. Attendance prizes were
awarded to J. J. Barrow, Towel Mill,
(a St. Marys Mardi Gras blanket), and
to W. R. Gover, formerly of the Synthe
tic Fabrics Mill, (a Country Flair sheet
