Had Best Housekeeping Record During 1962
The weavers an loom 59 established the best record for housekeep
ing in the Karastan Weave Room in 1962. They won the monthly
housekeeping award seven times during the year. Weavers on the
loom, shown above, left to right, are James Roberts, Edgar Clark, and
Hobert Hundley.
An attractive certificate is awarded each month on the loom which
has the highest total points in four inspections made by the supervisors.
The certificate is posted on the loom and remains there during the fol
lowing month to call attention to the outstanding housekeeping.
Scliolarship Recipient Makes U.N.C. Honor Roll
Richard Ray Watkins, a Fieldcrest
scholarship recipient, made the Honor
Roll at the University of North Caro
lina, Chapel Hill, during the fall se
mester, 1962-63. He made a grade of
“B” or better on all work taken (not
less than 15 hours).
In a letter to Richard’s parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Thomas A. Watkins, the dean
of the General College, J. Carlyle Sit-
terson, pointed out that less than six
per cent of the students in the General
College achieved such high academic
distinction.
“It is a pleasure to congratulate you
on the fine work of your son,” Dean
Sitterson wrote.
Richard is a 1962 graduate of More-
head High School. His father is a loom-
fixer at the Bedspread Mill and his
mother (Daisy) is a weaver in the same
plant.
At the University, where he plans to
major in business administration, Rich
ard is being assisted financially by a
Fieldcrest scholarship worth $2,000 over
the four years of college attendance.
To date, the Fieldcrest Foundation has
granted a total of eight scholarships and
is scheduled to give additional scholar
ships each year to employees or children
of employees who are entering college
for the first time.
Since March 1, the Fieldcrest Scholar
ship Committee has been accepting ap-

plications for the scholarships to be
given this year. April 1 is the deadline
for the submission of applications.
Recipients are selected by the Field
crest Scholarship Committee on the basis
of the student’s academic aptitude, good
citizenship and leadership, and the need
for financial assistance in obtaining a
college education.
