COMPANY ACQUIRES MUSCOGEE MILLS

ing Company into Fieldcrest Mills, Inc.
became effective Friday, July 26, fol
lowing approval of the merger by the
shareowners of the two companies in
separate meetings July 24.
The Muscogee operation is now called
Muscogee Mills, a Unit of Fieldcrest
Mills, Inc.
Located at Columbus, Ga., Muscogee
was founded in 1867 and produces terry
towels, toweling and some mattress tick
ing. A large percentage of the produc
tion is sold to the large chain stores and
to nationally-known mattress manu
facturers.
All of the operations are housed at one
plant location. Muscogee has 1,045 looms
and 34,252 spindles. The plant employs
about 1,350 people.
The city of Columbus is located on
the Chattahoochee River in western
Georgia and is 100 miles south of At
lanta. Columbus is a trading center for
16 West Georgia and Four East Ala
bama counties with a population of
500,000. Columbus is the dominant city
in the region with an urban population
of 158,382.
Situated 160 miles from the Gulf
of Mexico, Columbus is scheduled to be
come Georgia’s furthermost inland port.
By late 1963, the Chattahoochee River
will be navigable from the Gulf Intra-
Coastal Waterway to Columbus through
a 9-foot deep by 100-foot channel for
barge traffic, with assurance of an
abundant industrial water supply.
The Georgia Ports Authority has an
nounced plans to construct a $770,000
docking and warehousing facility at
Columbus. The city has deeded 88 acres
of riverfront property for use in de
velopment of the port.
Columbus is a modern and progressive
industrial city producing, in addition to
diversified textile items, such products
as soft drinks, peanuts and peanut pro
ducts, cotton ginning equipment, textile
machinery and dyeing equipment, agri
cultural tools, women’s full-fashioned
hosiery, men’s clothing and other pro
ducts.
Adjacent to Columbus is Fort Ben-
ning, the world-famous U. S. Army In
fantry School. Fort Benning is the birth
place of airborne training and the home
of the U. S. Army Rangers and one of
only two Officer Candidate Schools in
the country.
